  1. ANSI Committee on Education Student Paper Competition FYI for the SEC IEEE Standards Education Committee 23 August 2011 Susan K. Tatiner

  2. Background • ANSI Committee on Education has decided to start an annual student paper competition (being careful not to compete with the World Standards Day Paper Competition). • Theme of the 2011 competition is “How standards facilitate innovation and competition and how the U.S. benefits from active engagement.” • All entries must be a student (undergrad or grad) -written paper. Authors are encouraged to cite concrete examples demonstrating how standards spur innovation, drive competitiveness, and advance U.S. interests in the international arena. Papers should not exceed 2000 words and should be submitted in the provided template.

  3. Judging and prizes • Members of the paper competition ad hoc of the ANSI COE will be the judges. •  Staff will ensure that entries are submitted to the judges as anonymous entries to make judging fair.   Judging will be done via a Zoomerang survey – also anonymous – using a ranking system. •  Papers will be published on ANSI’s web site with the freedom to publish elsewhere . Upon request, ANSI staff will assist in seeking and negotiating additional publication venues. •  For 2011, 1st and 2nd place papers will be presented at the Winter COE meeting in either DC or NY (February/March 2012). A small stipend will be given for travel for winners . • In subsequent years, papers will be presented at the planned Education event at WSW in DC. •  Prize values:  1st 2500, 2nd 1000, 3rd 500. • Reserve right to award NO prizes based on the determination of the judges.

  4. Deadlines and other dates • Competition will be announced on or about 25 August. • ANSI COE members will facilitate announcement by distributing through their student chapters. ANSI will also send a PDF to participants in its University Outreach program. • Deadline for submission of papers is 30 November. • Judges review will take place from 1 to 20 December. • Winners will be announced in January 2012. • Papers will be presented at Winter COE meeting in February or March 2012. • Following the Winter COE meeting, ANSI COE will immediately announce the 2nd student paper competition.
