  3. North and South Korea • Korea under Japanese control during WWII • Divided along the 38th parallel after WWII • North Korea: Communist • South Korea: Noncommunist

  4. Start of Korean War: June 1950 • North Korean troops invade South Korea • Armed with Soviet equipment • North Korean forces take over much of South Korea • US & United Nations forces halt North Korean advance
