  1. بسم الله الرحمن الرحيمAN-NAJAH NATIONAL UNIVERSITYFACULTY OF ENGINEERINGCIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN Asera – Ash-shamalia Prepared by: ANAS ODEH HUSSEIN SWALLMAH

  2. Introduction • Solid waste is defined as a material that is cheaper to throw away than to store or use. • Solid waste management (SWM) is an important environmental health service, and is an integral part of basic urban services.

  3. Why we need to swm in Asera – Ash-shamalia ? • To improve solid waste collection and disposal system. • To improve environmental situation. • To cover the village at appropriate time.

  4. The objective • To determine the quantities of solid waste at Asira Ash-shamalia • To assess the environmental impacts from solid waste • To design containers to stored the solid waste • To design collection routes • To design a sanitary landfill

  5. What has been done ? • Collect data and information about Asira Ash-shamalia • Apply questionnaire • Determine solid waste generation • Design container • Design collection route • Design sanitary landfill

  6. Study area

  7. Study area • Geography and Topography • Climate • Demography and Population • Solid Waste Situation

  8. Geography and Topography

  9. Demography and Population

  10. Apply questionnaire • Percentage of Education Level of Household Head

  11. Apply questionnaire • Percentage of Household Disposal per Days

  12. Solid waste generation rate • Sample size 52 household • Solid waste generation rate kg/c.d = 0.97 • Average density = 0.43 kg/L

  13. Design container • Select container 1000 L= 1 m3 • The population in Asera – Ash-shamalia is equal 9675 capita, and the number of houses is 1025 house • The ratio of person per house is 9675/1025 = 10 person / house • The rate of solid waste generate in two days per house = 0.97*10*2 = 19.4 kg/house • The volume of solid waste for each house is equal in two days = 19.4/0.43 = 45 L / house • The container served 22 houses per two days

  14. Design of distribution container

  17. Figure 3

  18. Figure 4

  19. Design of Collection Routs • The specific truck or semitrailer required for a community should be selected by considering the following aspects: 1-Waste should be transported at a minimum cost 2-Waste must be covered during transport 3-The vehicles should be designed to operate effectively and safely in the traffic conditions founded on the hauling routes 4-Truck capacity must ensure that it never exceeds road weight limits 5-Truck design should prevent leakage of liquids during hauling

  20. Design of Collection Routs • The vehicle of collecting solid waste Mid range rear loader is selected, volume of solid waste in this vehicle in range (10 – 30 yd3 ) the average of volume equivalent to 15.3 m3 • Collect approximately 15 container, equivalent to 330 houses • The number of trips need = 1025/330 = 3 times

  21. Design of Collection Routs

  22. Design of Collection Routs • We divide area to 3 zones

  23. Design of Sanitary Landfill • Compacted specific weight of solid waste in landfill = 470.86 kg/m3 • Average depth of compacted solid waste = 7 m • The daily solid waste generation rate in ton/day • Generation rate = 9675 *0.97 = 9.38 ton/d • The required volume per day = 9.38 / 0.47086 =19.9 m3/d • Area required per year = (19.9*365)/7 =1038 m2/yr • For 10 years design the area required = 1038*10 = 10380 m2

  24. Design of Sanitary Landfill
