Background • Friends of Patterson Park surveyed neighbors around the park (2004, +/-500 respondents) • Hosted a community forum on dogs & the park (May ’04, attended by 85) • The “Friends” formed a committee of dog owners & non-dog owners from around the community to • Review results of survey & forum • Explore options • Develop recommendations • Committee has been meeting since September 2004 • Reviewed results • Met w/representatives from Mayor’s Office & Parks • Met w/folks from Canton Dog Park • Developed a preliminary proposal & work plan

Draft Proposal • A fenced dog area that: • Contributes to the safety & comfort of all park users • Creates a place for dogs & owners to exercise w/out interfering with other park users • Conforms to City guidelines • Increases the value of the park • Is not an eyesore • Paid for from private $ • Includes a plan for the long-term upkeep • Provides an alternative to off-leash dog walking around the park

  10. Highlights • Design • Developing a blueprint for dog area • Including all necessary elements (fences, water fountains, etc.) • Also developing a budget, cost estimates • Considerations • Fence must meet established architectural style of park • 2 sections (small dogs/big dogs)

  11. Highlights • Maintenance • Developing a plan for long-term maintenance & upkeep of dog park • Considerations • A long-term commitment • City guidelines • Daily, weekly, monthly, annual needs addressed • Identify the who (volunteers, friends staff, city partnerships, etc.)
