Family Connections • Utilize Naviance for your career and college planning. • Also to prep for the PSAT, SAT & ACT • Mrs. Nichols, College & Career Counselor, will be working with students each year to utilize different aspects of the program. • NEW: X2VOL—recording volunteer hours in Naviance

  4. Volunteer Recognition Cords New! Not part of the graduation requirement. What is required to be recognized? • 40 Hours of Volunteer Service each year • To be recognized, current Juniors will need to have a total of 80 hours by April 1, 2017 (April 1, prior to graduation). • Hours must be recorded in Naviance X2VOL and verified/approved through this service. http://www.tinyurl.com/thsnaviance

  6. Graduation Plans Recommended or Distinguished? • BOTH are for college bound students • College credit can be earned with either plan • Advanced Placement courses • Dual Credit courses • A combination of both

Requirements of 4 x 4 Distinguished Plan Class of 2017 only • 3 years of same foreign language • 4 Advanced Measures—any combination of: • College credit with a grade of “B” or higher in DC course = 1 measure • AP Exam with a score of “3” or higher = 1 measure • PSAT score (National Merit Scholar = 1 measure) • Original Research Project =1 measure

  8. Advanced Placement (AP) • AP is open enrollment • Students are responsible for ordering and paying for AP tests beginning in January and throughout February and the first half of March. The current deadline is Friday, March 11. There is a 10-day window, with a $10 penalty fee, to order by the absolute deadline of March 21. • Current cost is $97 per exam • AP Exams are taken in the first two weeks of May

  9. AP • AP Scores are reported “1 to 5” and available online to students in July. A “5” is the highest score possible. • College credit is awarded by student’s college, requireing a “3” or higher. • New: HB 1992 Texas state universities are to award credit for a “3”, beginning Fall 2016, depending on students major requirements. • See individual college sites to determine requirements.

  10. Dual Credit (DC) • DC requires: • Lone Star College application • Required qualifying placement scores • College registration by THS deadline (May 2) • Payment of LSC fees by THS deadline (June 1) • One 3-hour English course is approximately $66 a semester for college fees • Lone Star awards college credit on transcript • In addition to LSC fees, students are responsible for books

Dual Credit Meeting • Parent Meeting for “First Timers” is Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. • Mandatory meetings for first time students before (6:45) and after school (2:45) • New DC Students February 10 and February 11 • Procedures for applying, testing and registering will be presented • Returning DC students February 16, through DC classroom.

New Offerings • College Readiness for juniors and seniors • This is an SAT/ACT prep course • Wildlife has changed to a one year Ag course, instead of a semester • Financial Math can be a new business elective for 2017 seniors • Principles of Engineering for those juniors currently enrolled in Intro to Engineering.

  25. Course Selection Timeline • February 2nd (Tuesday) • Makeup date is Feb. 3 • Verification sheets will be distributed February 26 and March 6. • Request changes by Friday, March 11. Return form to any counseling office

PSAT • Redesigned PSAT was administered Fall 2015 • To coordinate with the redesigned SAT beginning in March, 2016 • Good practice for redesigned SAT • Scores were available online January • Printed reports will arrive and be distributed in February • My College Quick Start • Parent meeting Monday, Feb. 22, 6:30 • Presented by Princeton Review

SAT and ACT • Register online • www.collegeboard.org • www.actstudent.org • Recommended to be taken no later than in spring of junior year • Remaining SAT dates (redesigned): • March 5, May 7 (THS) and June 4 (THS) • Remaining ACT dates: • April 9 (THS) and June 11 • Allow 8 weeks to receive new SAT scores!

Summer School • Information available in April • Student can take only the following for original credit: • Communication Applications • Health • PE • BIM (one semester or two) • Government (seniors) • Economics (seniors) • Medical Terms and/or Principles of Health Science • Advanced classes are not offered in summer school.

Rank • Junior Rank (5 semester rank) • Will be handed Tuesday, January 26, at lunches. • GPA & Rank (6 semester rank for college apps) • Distributed to Class of 2017 end of July, prior to August 1. Does not include summer school grades. • Final Rank (7 semesters) • Distributed in late January 2017

University Bound? • Apply Texas opens August 1 • Ordering transcripts • Reporting test scores • Be aware of deadlines & apply early • Check your chosen college catalogs and course numbers in degree plans when choosing your senior courses. • In Texas: Check the Texas Common Course Numbering System and compare (especially helpful when scheduling Dual Credit). www.tccns.org
