  1. Page 52 of writing ISN, left side. Transitions Transitions are words and phrases that are used to move from one idea, sentence, paragraph to another. Using effective word choice helps keep your transitions from becoming repetitive or boring.

  2. Basic Transitions Basic transitions work best in areas such as science or math or in expository essays where you are talking about sequence and order. Examples: first, second, and third One, another, next the first, the second, the third One, another, last

  3. Burying Transitions to Improve Fluency To improve sentence fluency, you want to make the location of the transition word change instead of always being the sentence opener. Burying the transition word forces a restructurization of the order of the sentence which usually results in a much more interesting sentence structure. Another important reason to quit smoking is this habit is expensive. Quitting smoking is an expensive habit, and it is another important reason to stop.

  4. Pulling Transition Phrases A second way to vary transitions is to pull the transitions and replace them with synonyms. Original: To begin with, tourists in Anchorage often go to the Alaska Native Heritage Center to learn about the cultures in our state.
