  1. 2005 / 2006 REPORTON 180 HEALTH PROMOTING SCHOOLS SUCCESSES / IMPACT All the Health Promoting Schools have fenced food gardens contributed by the Department of Health

The total no of schools is 6000 in the Eastern Cape. • Up to now there are 180 Health Promoting Schools in the Eastern Cape. • Old Mutual donated Health educational Billboards for 4 HPS to the value of R32 000.00 • Food foundation NGO trained 5 HPS and their communities on trench method of agriculture. • Roll out training to 20 Schools on trench method in nodal site • Garden tools for 30 Schools donated by the Provincial Dept of Agriculture.

Eskom donated 40 computers, Mark Shuttleworth donated 20 and Telkom donated 20 for Zanoxolo P.S. in PE. • 63 Computers were donated by the Departments of Communications and Labour to 12 HPS through a local member of Parliament, Chief Pathekile Holomisa • Implementation of Anti Tobacco Act has been done in 20 HPS • Paraffin Safety workshops in 3 Districts have been conducted in most informal settlements

HPS endeavors are continuously marketed through electronic and non electronic media by Health Communications Directorate and Health Promoters, the Schools now invite the Department of Health for their Schools to be changed to HPS, the demand is now very high. • There is a strong Partnership with SABC Umhlobo Wenene National Radio Station and the local Community Radios

  5. Physical Exercises are part of the Healthy lifestyles Program implemented in the HPS • There is strong partnership between the Department of Health, Rhodes , Walter Sisulu and Nelson Mandela Universities in HPS Programme

  6. 48 HPS had no water in the rural areas they received water tanks contributed by the Department of Health eg Water was sold to learners @20 a mug • Peer Education programme on life skills is implemented in collaboration with NGO’s eg. AMREF, Youth for Christ, food Garden foundation and Paraffin Safety.

  7. There are soup kitchens in HPS that benefit vulnerable children. • Interdepartmental collaboration with the Government Departments that form the social needs cluster makes this programme sustainable • The Premier of the EC. Donated tractor to Qokolweni HPS and its Community
