  2. Dates • Occurred between 1904-1907 • The uprising finally quashed 1907-1908

What Happened • Germany came to Namibia in 1840s, brought big guns and European military systems, then 1880s colonized • Tribes once peaceful, once Germany came they began to settle their fights with violence • Herero tried to rebel in 1904 to regain their land and lives • New military governor said “Leave, or we’ll send you to concentration camps and kill you” • Germans poisoned the desert wells • a lot of women sex slaves to Germans, their children were declared inferior to their fathers • Nama (smaller tribe) also rebelled, were defeated quickly

  4. Results & Legacy • 65, 000 Herero died, and 10,000 Nama • Hitler influenced by oppression and social Darwinism • In 2004, the Germans apologized to the descendants of the tribes, but didn’t pay them or compensate them for their HORRID actions
