  1. LANCE ARMSTRONG 2 By: Connor Haney

  2. INTRODUCTION • Lance Armstrong was born on September 18th, 1971. • He was born with the name Lance Gunderson in Dallas, Texas. • He is married to a women now named Sheryl Armstrong. • Lance and Sheryl have three kids, Luke, Max, and the other I couldn’t find.

  3. SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION Lance Armstrong's contribution to society is being a world champion bike rider with cancer. A girl from Lance’s home town of Dallas with cancer says that she has been encouraged to fight cancer because of him. Some doctors believe that it is Lance’s healthy and active lifestyle that fights his cancer. If more people do as he does, less people may day from cancer. This contribution is huge because it can save lives.

  4. CHILDHOOD Lance was born and grew up in Dallas, Texas. Lance got is first bike on his second birthday and it was a tricycle that he named Green Machine. When he was three, his mom got a divorce with lances biological father Eddie Gunderson and moved to Richardson, Texas with Lance. There his mom found a new boyfriend. His name is Terry Armstrong and he eventually adopted Lance as his own and married Linda (Lance’s mom). As Lance grew up, Terry would use a paddle to punish Lance for small misbehaviors. He also treated Linda poorly which led to a future divorce.

  5. ADOLESENCE When lance was 13, he rode his bike everywhere (also before but had more freedom being 13). When he was on the swim team for his school, his mom was too busy to drive him, so every meet he would ride his bike 10 miles to school, swim, and ride 10 miles home and have fun doing so. When he was 14, Lance joined a triathlon with his favorite sports, running, swimming, and biking. He struggled a little with running and swimming, but when he hopped on his bike, he ended up in first place with a record of best time in the race. The triathlon showed that he was a good cycler which motivated him to cycling. Eventually he started only cycling instead of triathlons.

  6. ADULTHOOD Lance competed in many cycling events and won a handful of them, but before he started getting on win streaks, all he did was go fast and burn his energy early. That was great for short races, but a killer as the courses got longer. Lance probably lost more races in early adulthood that won. But when he did win, he usually broke a record. His first Tour de France win was in 1999. This is one of the longest and most famous cycling race in the world. The first time he competed in the Tour de France, he dropped out in the 10th stage out of 20. A couple years before that, he placed 14th in the 1992 summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.

  7. JIM HOYT Jim Hoyt is the owner of the Richardson Bike Shop in Richardson, Texas. This shop is right across the street from Lance’s house when he was seven. Lance and Linda often spent time together and Jim admired how hard Linda worked to support Lance. So being generous, Jim gave Lance a great deal on a new Schwinn Mag Scrambler BMX with yellow wheels (his first two-wheeled bike). The bike cost $129.99 originally but Lance got it for $50. Him and his mom were thrilled. (Jim Hoyt is on the right)

  8. PRESIDENT Richard M. Nixon was the 37th president of the United States and the 36th vice president. He actually enjoys the sport of cycling.

  9. INTERVIEW • Is and has cycling been your favorite sport, if not, then what is or was? • Did you have an inspiration to do cycling or did you do it by choice? • Did you ever think about quitting cycling after you were diagnosed with cancer?
