Speeches of Introduction • DEFINITION: ‘introduces main speaker to audience’ • EXAMPLES: Awards show—host introduces next presenter, Graduation—class president introduces guest speaker • TIPS: Keep it brief, be accurate (e.g. know their title, pronunciation of name), adapt (to the speaker…occasion…audience), add a little flare (e.g. drama and anticipation, humor—if appropriate)

Speeches of presentation • DEFINITION: ‘presenting a gift, award, or other type of public recognition’ • EXAMPLES: Honorary degrees, award ceremony at Academic Contest • TIPS: explain why audience is recipient, point our contributions (keep it brief—do not include everything). Can also explain award (and acknowledge those who did not win—if a competition). • Could this be combined with a speech of introduction?

  4. Speeches of Acceptance • DEFINITION: response to an award; giving thanks • EXAMPLES: Response from recipients of Honorary Degrees • TIPS: gives thanks; acknowledge those who have helped

  5. COMMEMORATIVE SPEECHES • DEFINITION: ‘pays tribute to person, group, institution, idea’ • EXAMPLES: Eulogies, dedications • TIPS: inform audience about subject (to inspire; to understand why…), use emotion and creative, vivid language,

Then, present recommendations (e.g. oral report, symposium, panel) • Responsibilities: • - Create group goals (and commit to them) • - Fulfill individual assignments (on time!) • - Avoid interpersonal conflicts • - Encourage others • - Stay on track (e.g. with discussions, project, goals)
