GenderInfo

This proposal outlines the development of GenderInfo, a global database that compiles standard gender indicators and promotes the efficient dissemination of gender statistics at the national level. Based on the DevInfo platform, GenderInfo aims to increase accessibility and use of gender statistics, while bringing together sources of data and indicators.   3. Existing Initiatives • Focus on specific topics such as health, education, work, etc. • Focus on specific regions • Focus on specific policy areas such as violence against women, reproductive health, poverty, etc. • Few bring things together

  4. Global Needs • Mainstreaming gender statistics at the national level • Increase accessibility and use of gender statistics through the efficient use of information technology • Bring together sources of data, indicators and gender statistics frameworks.

GenderInfo: A proposal • Global Database with a compilation of standard gender indicators at the international level. • Instrument to promote the dissemination of standard gender indicators at the national level • Based on the DevInfo platform • Provide state-of-the-art technology for data management and presentation • Provide a standard mechanism for the exchange of statistical information

GenderInfo: DevInfo platform • DevInfo is a database system which monitors progress towards the Millennium Development Goals • It generates tables, graphs and maps for reports and presentations • It has been developed in cooperation with the UN system and has been adapted from UNICEF ChildInfo technology • It maintains indicators by time periods and geographic areas to monitor commitments to sustained human development

GenderInfo: Challenges • Agreeing on a comprehensive list of gender indicators that covers both gender concerns and take global data availability into consideration • Coordinating multiple sources through partnership mechanisms with United Nations agencies and other institutions. • Agreeing on a common global framework.

GenderInfo: The Project • March 2007: expected first release • What do we have? • Initial inventory of indicators obtained from multiple programs and guidelines • Likely sources from where data will be obtained. • A preliminary framework that resulted from the combination of existing frameworks at the national, regional and global level

GenderInfo: The Future • Continuous publication of global gender statistics (annual CD) • Creation of national and regional GenderInfo’s to streamline the dissemination of gender statistics • Endorsement by the United Nations community through partnership agreements following the MDG model. • Promotion of a persistent debate towards the creation of a global gender statistics system
