  1. Writing Legal Papers

    Do’s and don’ts
  2. The layout of your paper Intro to the current issue Using the IRAC method talk about every point of the legal issue. Write a neat legal conclusion.
  3. Some Do’s Make sure to cite. Best citations are from the original source. Quote from the book only if you have to. Most cases are online so you can’t say that you couldn’t quote from the original. Just FYI.
  4. More Do’s Make sure to address your strongest argument first. You don’t have to make it flow between your arguments per say but you do have to have a logical reason behind the listing of your arguments i.e. if you mention this first, it better be the best argument and so on and so forth.
  5. More Do’s Make sure you apply every case or law you mention to the issue at hand. Remember IRAC (Issue, rule, application, conclusion). If you can’t apply the court case or law to the issue you are citing then you just wasted my time.
  6. Some Don’ts Don’t plagiarize. IT IS NOT HARD TO TELL IF YOU DID, SO DON’T. Don’t go off on tangents Don’t write like a journalist, this is a legal paper not an article for the newspaper. Don’t assume we know what you are talking about. If we have to think about what you said and how it applies to the case study, you failed on your paper.
  7. How to cite (Case v. Case in Author’s name, p. 4) That for a book quotation. After the first time you cite from a book you just say (Author’s name, p. 26) For direct quotes from a court case. (Case v. Case , 234 US 29 (1972)) Remember to set off long quotes and indent them.
  8. Questions? If you want me to review it then remember to email it to me.
