  1. Smokejumper Oral History Project An Application Profile by Teressa Keenan Photos courtesy of The National Smokejumpers Association http://www.smokejumpers.com/

  2. The Collection • Mansfield Library at The University of Montana Oral History collection • Complete collection contains over 2000 taped interviews on topics including … • The depression in Montana • The History of Smokejumping • Montana’s Feminists • The History of the University of Montana • Concentrate on a subset of the collection • The History of Smokejumping

  3. The History of Smokejumping • Forest Service began project in 1984 • Taken over by the University of Montana • Contains approximately 100 taped interviews with transcripts or summaries • Digitization Project • 30 interviews digitized through a BCR Collaborative Digitization Program sound model grant • Goals • Provide archival quality digital copy for preservation • Provide easily streamed version of content for student /faculty research

  4. Choosing A Metadata Schema • Descriptive Metadata • Users need to be able to search by keyword, subject, interviewee, date, time period, location. • Technical Metadata • Accurate representation of original recording and digital versions for preservation purposes • Administrative Metadata • Provide accurate information concerning rights and usage • Consider Interoperability and Semantic Web to increase/maintain future access to collection

  5. Descriptive Metadata • Considerations • Flexibility/Granularity of schema & elements • Compatible with Content DM • Convertable to/from MARC • Ease of use for faculty/staff/student employees • Future expansion possibilities & interoperabilty • Decision Made • Dublin Core (DC) • Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS)

  6. Technical Metadata • Considerations • User friendly for the non-audio specialist • Covers aspects unique to audio and textual materials • Allows description of original and digital objects • Compatible with METS to allow future refinement and expansion of metadata records • Decision • Schema for Technical Metadata for Text (TextMD) • LC-AV Audio Metadata Extension Schema (AudioMD)

  7. Administrative Metadata • Considerations • Facilitate management, tracking, migration and re-use of digital assets • Record details on creation, quality control, rights and preservation • Decision • Mods • Dublin Core

  8. The Application Profile: edited with XMLSpy

  9. Aplication Profile (AP): Details • Created local elements for public display purposes • Declaired in local namespace • Mapped to Dublin Core for interoperability

  10. Element Declarations Comments/Best Practice Advise Syntax Encoding Scheme Controlled Vocabulary

  11. AP Details : Searching Concerns • Provide ability to search by time period, date range or geographic location • Coverage element • Coverage element -Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names • Temporal element -using DCMI Period Encoding Scheme & local controlled vocablary for consistancy edited with XMLSpy

  12. AP Details : Technical/Preservation • Incomplete information on digitization process and technical audio specifications • Created optional local element ml:digitizationSpecifications which is mapped to dc:description <ml:digitizationSpecifications> Analog/Digital Converter: Prism Sound Dream ADA-8XR . File name/size: UMToh133-001.sideA .wav 735350 KB & UMToh033-001.sideA .mp3 19454 KB </ml:digitizationSpecifications> edited with XMLSpy

  13. AP Details : Technical/Preservation • Flexibility to add more detailed preservation and technical metadata in the future • Use of AudioMD & TextMD schemas edited with XMLSpy
