  2. Antigen • Foreign substance usually a protein, or a polysaccharide that stimulates the immune system to react such that to produce antibodies.

  3. Self Antigen • An antigen that the body itself produces the antigens

  4. Antigen Receptor • Receptor proteins in the plasma membrane of immune system cells whose shape allows them to combine with a specific antigen

  5. Plasma Cell • Matured B cell that produces antibodies.

  6. Memory B cell • Forms during a primary immune response, but enters a resting phase until secondary immune response occurs.

  7. Antibody-mediated Immunity • Specific mechanism of defense in which plasma cells derive from B cells produce antibodies that combine with antigens. • Defense by B cells

  8. Immunoglobulins • Globular plasma protein that functions as an antibody.

  9. B cells has a b cell receptor (bcr) designated by shape that will combine with a specific antigen. Activation occurs when antigen combines with BCR. In the presence of cytokines, the b cell undergoes clonal expansion producing many plasma cells that secrete antibodies specific to the antigen and memory b cells that remember the antigen in the future. After infection passes, plasma cells undergo apoptosis.
