  2. Wave-particle duality • What is wave-particle duality? • A property of light where it can be a wave and a particle at the same time.

  4. Wave • Light is actually an electrometric wave, visible light, ultraviolet light and infrared light is actually electrometric wave of different frequencies.

Milestones • Huygens and Newton. • Huygens • Earliest comprehensive on the theory of light, proposed that light is a wave • Was soon overshadowed by Isaac Newton • Isaac Newton • Proposed that light consisted of small particles • Explained refraction and rainbow, • Particle viewpoint remained unchallenged for a century

  9. Double-slit • A experiment whereby a laser beam is shone through a double silt plate. • Proves that light is a wavelenght

  10. Double-slit • If light is a particle, the image shone on the screen would follow the pattern of the plate, but instead it do not ( refer to single and double slit) • The patterns become much wider and detailed. • It is inferred that light is a Wave length

Photoelectric Effect • Properties • Electrons were emitted immediately (no time lag) • Increasing light intensity increased the number of photoelectrons but not their maximum kinetic energy • No matter the intensity, red light will not cause ejection of electrons • Weak violet light would eject few electrons but have greater kinetic energy

Photoelectric Effect • Explanation • Higher-frequency photons have more energy and thus makes electron fly out with a higher speed. • Switching to a light with higher frequency would increase the maximum kinetic energy an electron would have • Higher intensity light would knock out more electrons. • higher intensity would result in more photons and thus more electrons

  13. Photoelectric Effect • Red light would not cause the ejection of any electron as the photons does not have enough energy to knock the electron out. • Thus light behaves as a particle in this case • The Einstein equation • E= hf • E energy, h6.626 x 10-34 j seconds , f frequency of lgiht
