  2. Christians People who follow Christianity are called Christians. Although there are many different types of Christians, they all believe in Jesus Christ.

  3. The Bible • The Christian holy book is called The Bible. • It is made up of 2 sections, The Old Testament and the New Testament.

  4. Symbols • The main symbol of Christianity is the cross or crucifix, it reminds Christians that Jesus died for them by being hung on the cross. • Christians have lots of symbols. Candles represent the light that Jesus brings to the world. • Water represents cleanliness, washing away sins, and new beginnings.

  5. Beliefs and Teachings • Christian beliefs are founded on the teachings of Jesus Christ as set forth in  the  New  Testament.  They  are  also  based  on  the  Hebrew  Bible,  or  Old Testament. Since its birth almost 2,000 years ago, Christianity has anchored its belief system on two convictions: that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came to earth  to  live  and  die  for  the  redemption  of  humankind;  and  that  He  arose from the dead. These two beliefs are unique to Christianity. The cross is the chief  symbol  of  Christianity. In the broadest sense, Christianity embraces all who follow the example of Christ. The Christian faith is often expressed through creeds.

  6. Christian Practices • Most Christians attend worship services at church on Sundays, which generally include singing, prayer and a sermon. Most Christian churches have a special ritual for ordination, or designating a person fit for a leadership position in the church. At home, most practicing Christians pray regularly and many read the Bible. • Nearly all Christians will have been baptized, either as an infant or as an adult, and regularly participate in communion (also called the Lord's Supper and the Eucharist). Baptism and communion are considered sacraments - sacred rituals instituted by Christ himself. • The Catholic Church recognizes five additional sacraments, as well as many other distinctive practices that are known as "sacramentals" or "devotions" and include praying the rosary and going on pilgrimages. Both Catholic and Orthodox Churches have religious orders. The most distinctive practice of Orthodoxy is the emphasis on icons, although Catholics use them as well.

  8. Holy Places • Christians have many special places. These are called shrines. These places are special for many reasons. • Christians worship in churches. • Special places for Christians include Fatima, in Portugal, Bethlehem, and Rome in Italy where the Pope lives. • My favourite Christian holy place is…

  9. Festivals • Christians celebrate many festivals and holy days each year. The most exciting are Christmas and Easter. • Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus and Easter celebrates the time when he rose form the dead.
