  1. GENI: Commercialization Issues Gee Rittenhouse gee@alcatel-lucent.com

  2. GENI Programmable Core Node (PCN) (Programmable Core Router - PCR) (Frame data – SONET and proprietary) (Extract Circuits – ala. SONET X-connect) (Transform/Select Wavelength – ROADM+) (Switch Dark Fiber) Reference: GENI GDD-06-26 • Fiber • Lambda • Circuit • Framer

  3. Control Processor Open Interface Programmable Forwarding Programmable Forwarding Shift to Open Programmable Network Elements to Meet GENI Facility Needs Closed Network Element Open Network Element Control Processor Proprietary Interface Forwarding Element Forwarding Element Industry Standard GENI Architecture

  4. Worldwide Core & Edge RoutersMarket Assessment (In-Stat 2005) - TAM • Total Revenues will grow to over $8.4B by 2009 • L2/L3 Switches – another high growth segment (not included in these numbers)

  5. Vendor Viewpoint • Standard Architecture • Closed architectures optimized for handling current commercial requirements • Bundled hardware-software systems with proprietary architectures • High margins for complete systems • Not commoditized systems • Long-term maintenance contracts provided predictable revenue stream • Etc. • GENI Architecture • Open architecture for flexibility • Potentially disruptive to current product families • Large commercial vendors will likely not pursue this architecture. Will likely be built by startup or University.
