  1. If it’s black, copy it into your notes. Objective: Introduction to Matter, the study called chemistry Matter is the stuff that makes up everything, everywhere. Here, there, and everywhere else. Matter takes up space and has mass. Matter can interact with other matter (make chemical bonds) or not interact with other stuff. It comes in several forms, or phases.

  3. Pure Matter Elements – the limited few (about 115) kinds of atoms, the simplest particles of the whole Universe. These types of matter cannot be broken down into simpler things (they can be destroyed into just protons, neutrons and electrons, but that is not the same thing). Each element has a set of unique properties that exist when the element is an element in the pure form. Elements can combine CHEMICALLY BONDING to each other in special ratios, making the Compounds. Compounds are pure too, they have specific combinations, and they have their own properties, different than the elements that make them up. The smallest part of a compound is either a MOLECULE or something strange, called a FORMULA UNIT. Examples of compounds include: H2O, CO2+ NaCl.

  4. Sodium is a shiny silver colored metal, chlorine is a greenish colored gas. The gas would kill you if you breathed it, and the metal would react with your saliva (water) and explode in your mouth. + But once they react, the form something you need to stay alive, called sodium chloride, or NaCl. What’s that?

  5. Sodium chloride is table salt. Salts are compounds, made from metal elements bonding to nonmetal elements from the periodic table. This is just one kind of salt, there are hundreds of kinds of salts, probably more!

  6. Elements form into compounds Compounds break down into elements. Both elements and compounds have formulas or symbols. The compounds are madeexactly the same every time, there is only one kind of sodium chloride. There is only one kind of dihydrogen monoxide. What the heck is that? Dihydrogen monoxide is H2O, water!

  7. Matter that is NOT PURE is Mixed. The MIXTURES come in 2 varieties as well. Mixtures can be the same throughout, or HOMOGENEOUS, Or different throughout, HETEROGENEOUS. HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURES: include all solutions (salty water, sugar water, milkshakes, black coffee, and air) Heterogeneous mixtures include soup, stones, beach sand , and bucket-fulls of muddy water.

  8. All matter comes in phases. Three are easy, one is probably new. The 4th phase is when matter dissolves into water, it’s called AQUEOUS. That’s not a liquid, that’s dissolved in liquid water. Like sugar into hot tea. Solid sugar dissolves.
