  2. CERTTS history • Clinical encounter real-time tracking system • Formerly PDA-based system for IUSM • Used to: • Track student clinical encounters • Assess student clinical skill proficiency

  3. CERTTS changes for 2011 • In June 2011, IUSM will move away from the outdated PDA-based interface. • We will upgrade to a handheld mobile web platform (iPhone, Droid, etc). • CERTTS will still center around student handheld devices.

  4. Why change? • Improved user function • Improved technology • Improved security • Improved data collection • Programming potential & software ownerhsip

  5. Change for clinical preceptors • The new interface will look identical to previous PDA forms with one exception: no signatures. • A personal PIN will replace your signature. • Preceptors will be asked to complete a one-time account registration with CERTTS.

  6. Preceptor PIN • Preceptor PINs… • will be chosen by the preceptor • must be a minimum of 4 numeric characters • may be > 4 numeric characters • will not be viewable on device screens • will be emailed to preceptors upon registration • may be changed at any time.

  8. Preceptor account registration • To use the new CERTTS interface, preceptors must complete a quick, one-time account registration on the student’s handheld device. • Preceptors need only a valid email address and a chosen PIN to register.

  9. Preceptor registration: Step 1 • Student will logon to his/her device. • The CERTTS homepage will display. • Select “Registration” from homepage

  10. Preceptor registration: Step 2 • Preceptor will be prompted to enter: • Name • Role (faculty, PGY-1, etc.) • Email address • PIN (will not be viewable on screen) • Select “Register me” when complete.

  11. Preceptor registration: Step 3 • Students’ devices will default back to student data entry screen. • CERTTS will email preceptor PIN and confirmation of registration to the selected email address. • Preceptors may begin using the system immediately.

  12. Preceptor PIN maintenance • Preceptors are urged to keep their PIN secure at all times. • Preceptors can request to be emailed with a forgotten PIN by using the homepage via device. • Preceptors can also reset a PIN by using the homepage via device.

  13. CERTTS Skills Assessments – Faculty Expectations

Criteria-based assessments • Faculty are urged to consistently use provided criteria to gauge student skill proficiency. • Faculty resources for student skill criteria: • Clerkship-specific skill criteria • Basic Clinical Skills Level 2 Checklists book • MECA website (medicine.iu.edu/meca) • CERTTS interface checklists (…coming soon)

  15. ‘Signing off’ on clinical skills • Preceptors will be asked to ‘sign’ student skills assessments via PIN. By doing so, • IUSM preceptors attest to a student’s proficiency with that specific skill… • relative to the skill criteria provided. • It is acceptable not to verify proficiency if student performance is lacking.

  16. Feedback • Our students expect to receive verbal feedback for each observed clinical skills encounter. • Regardless of skill proficiency, preceptors should provide students with formative feedback.

  17. Variable clerkship use of CERTTS • Some clerkships require student encounter tracking without preceptor verifications. • All ‘skills assessment’ encounters require preceptor PIN verification & feedback. • Check with your Clerkship Director for clarification regarding clerkship CERTTS use.
