  2. Syllabus Course Description • Designed to introduce you to the basics of the German language. • Proficiency in the language is the focus. • Topics include describing yourself & others, hobbies and sports, the family, home, school & education, the weather and the environment, etc. • Explores the different cultures of German speaking nations. • Emphasizes the four main goals of studying a second language: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

  3. TEXTBOOK/YOUR NOTEBOOK: • Deutsch Aktuell 1 textbook • Deutsch Aktuell 1 workbook • YOUR BINDER WITH HANDOUTS AND NOTES WILL BE YOUR PRIMARY RESOURCE!! • You will receive vocabulary sheets and other supplementary materialsthat you will be required to keep throughout the whole semester. If you do not have your notebook with you, I will consider you unprepared for the day.

  4. Required Supplies: 1. 3 RING BINDER 2. 6 divider tabs 3. Loose-leaf paper-No spiral notebook paper, please! 4. Blue or black pens and a colored pen for corrections—no pencils! 5. A highlighter 6. 1 Bound/marble composition notebookfor journals—no spirals, please! 7. INDEX CARDS—You will be required to make vocabulary flashcards for each chapter; this will be part of your homework when we begin each unit. Please have at least 100 index cards ready at home to make flashcards for each unit. 8. 2 boxes of tissues, or 2 rolls of paper towels—for the first week of school, donated to the classroom.

  5. DAILY CLASS EXPECTATIONS: 1. BE ON TIME FOR CLASS! 2. COME PREPARED WITH MATERIALS. 3. PARTICIPATE AND ASK QUESTIONS. 4. FOLLOW ALL SCHOOL AND CLASS RULES. 5. TURN IN ALL ASSIGNMENTS ON TIME! 6. DO YOUR BEST WORK AT ALL TIMES! **NO WHINING!

  6. GRADING POLICY: Homework (15%): HW will be assigned every class day with few exceptions. It is always due the very next class day, unless otherwise noted. Homework is posted on the white board in class and should be written down daily. Tests & Quizzes (45%) Students should expect quizzes once or twice a week. Chapter tests will cover chapter material, and will usually contain a listening, reading, writing, and speaking section. Quizzes will generally be shorter, and will assess particular skills; i.e. vocabulary, grammar, or listening comprehension. Listening/Speaking Assessments and Assignments/Projects (30%): Occasionally students will receive specific listening or speaking assessments—these may be unannounced and done periodically throughout the semester. These include listening segments that correspond to the video series accompanying Deutsch Aktuell I and correspond to our lessons. Assignments in this category include all other papers, projects, presentations, notebook checks, and journals. This includes “Mini-projekte” that we do during class time and which may be taken home for completion. Midterm/Project 10% In the first quarter we will have a midterm; in the second quarter we will have either a test or a project. REMEMBER, I DO NOT GIVE OUT GRADES--YOU EARN THEM!!

  7. Getting More Out of Class: • Speak German every chance you get!! Better to speak and make mistakes than to stay quiet and never even try.   8. LATE WORK POLICY: All work is due on the due date! No excuses! No late assignments will be accepted for credit, Unless you have an excused absence. HOWEVER, if you were in school the day an assignment was assigned, it is due immediately upon your return. See the absence policy for further details. ** ALL PROJECTS AND MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS WILL DROP A LETTER GRADE FOR EVERY DAY LATE. These types of assignments are usually worth 100 points or more.

  9. ABSENCE POLICY: 1st—consult HW board 2nd—consult with classmate or team member 3rd—ask me either before school or during lunch or after school for work—do not interrupt the class! 4th—schedule an apt. to make work up during Smart Lunch; freshmen—Wolverine Watch. You have as many days to make assignments up as you were absent, unless you knew you were going to be absent ahead of time.

  10. TARDY POLICY: CLASS OR PASS! Must have signed Sweeper Pass if you are late, or a Common Pass if it is excused! CONSEQUENCES FOR BEING LATE: ON TIME, IN TIME, OR YOUR TIME!! START ON TIME—SEE SCHOOL POLICY! CLASS RULES: COMPLY OR GOOD-BYE!—Non-negotiables are in effect. ***Remember—no electronic devices are to be used during instructional time unless given express permission by me!! 1. Show Respect to All People, including all school property. 2. Follow Instructions The First Time They Are Given. 3. Have Materials Out & Be Ready To Work When You Come In. 4. Raise Your Hand & Wait For Permission to Speak. 5. No Put-Downs!

CONSEQUENCES FOR BREAKING RULES: Included, but not limited to—verbal warning/student/teacher conference, ISS, Teacher ASD, administrative referral, contact/conference with parent/guardian, counselor *Students caught chewing gum: First offense…….Verbal Warning, gum must be disposed. Second, Third, and Subsequent offenses…..½ hour G.A.S.D., to be served either during SMART LUNCH OR AFTER SCHOOL— students must clean desks. G.A.S.D. not served? Deduct Points.

  13. BATHROOM POLICY 15-15 minute rule Students are expected to use the bathroom before class. Each student will receive 3 "free" bathroom passes each quarter, which can be redeemed should an emergency arise. These are to be used at your discretion and must not be lost. You are responsible for holding on to your bathroom pass. You will not be allowed to go to the bathroom without this pass.

  14. EXTRA HELP: Extra help and test/quiz make-ups are available during my SMART LUNCH tutorial sessions—Tuesdays B, Thursdays A. Freshmen students should see me to find out which day after school they can come; my schedule after school varies;Wolverine Watch.
