SAT • Created by the College Board • Administered several times a year • Reading, Writing, Math sections • Scored from 200 to 800 • Goal: at least 1000 for most in-state schools (does not include writing) • Up-coming test dates: • March 12 (February 11), May 7 (April 8) • Cost: • $47 (No Subject Tests), Fee Waiver available

  4. SAT Tips Focus on the questions you know Answer the questions you know Mark the questions you might know and go back to them if you have time Skip the questions you don’t know at all You do not lose points for questions you leave blank You lose a ¼ of a point for incorrect answers

ACT • An ACT International product • Administered several times a year • English, Reading, Math, and Science sections • Scored from 2 to 12 • Goal: at least 21 for most in-state schools • Up-coming test dates: • April 9 (March 4), June 11 (May 6) • Cost: • $33 (No Writing), Fee Waiver available

  8. College Degrees A 2-year degree is an Associates which equals approximately 60 credits. A 4-year degree is a Bachelors Degree which is approximately 130 credits. Most college classes are 3 credits each. To be considered a full-time student, you must complete a minimum of 12 credits per semester.

  11. What is FAFSA? • Free Application for Federal Student Aid • www.fafsa.ed.gov • Whether or not you think you’ll qualify for aid you MUST apply!!!!

How FAFSA works • You must have a current FAFSA complete to qualify for scholarships, grants and/or subsidized loans; • Grants you don’t pay back (unless you fail the class!); • Loans you pay back once you’re out of college for a semester; • A subsidized loan means the government pays the interest on your loan until you begin to pay it back.

How FAFSA Works con’t. • To submit a FAFSA, the student MUST be a permanent resident or citizen of the United States (even if parents are not); • However, for parents to have access to loans they, too must be permanent residents or citizens of the United State; • Copies of the 2010 Tax Return must be used to complete the FAFSA; • However, it can be submitted using the information on your last paystub or W2 for 2010.

How FAFSA Works con’t. • The FAFSA is available at fafsa.ed.gov beginning January 1; • The students who submit their FAFSA BEFORE January 31 are at the head of the line for aid; • The FAFSA should be submitted no later than April 15 for the 2011-2012 school year; • Students who plan on going to summer school should submit 2 (TWO) FAFSAs: • 2010-2011 (with 2009 Tax information) • 2011-2012 (with 2010 Tax information)

  15. FAFSAGrant Information • Pell Grant $4,731 • FSEOG $1,500 • ACG $750 1st Year,$1,300 2nd Year • State/FSAG $1,400 • In order to qualify for Grants your EFC (estimated family contribution) typically needs to be below $4,110.
