He taught in a way that caused people to think • Used unforgettable epigrams • An epigram is a brief, interesting, usually memorable and sometimes surprising or satirical statement. • Example: • “For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

  3. Caused people to think • Used thought-provoking paradoxes • A paradox is a statement that is seemingly contradictory or opposed to common sense and yet is perhaps true (Webster) • “Blessed are the poor in spirit” • “Blessed are those who mourn

Caused people to think • Vivid Hyperbole • Hyperbole is an “extravagant exaggeration” • At times people need shock treatment • “If your right eye…hand” (Matt. 5:29-30) • “…hate not your father (Lk. 14:26) • “…not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down”(Matt. 24:2)

  5. Caused people to think • Humor • Example: Plank (Matt. 7:1-5) • Good but can be abuse –He wasn’t a standup comedian!

  6. Caused people to think • Parable • “An earthly story with a heavenly meaning” • Found in OT • Nathan to David (2 Sam. 12:1-7) • Vineyard (Isa. 5:1-7) • But Jesus made it famous • Why important? • Allows man to discover truth for himself (Matt. 13:10-17)

  7. Examples: • God’s love for man (Lk. 15) • The kingdom (Matt. 13) • Preparation for His second coming (Matt. 25) • The importance of accepting God’s call for salvation (Matt. 22:1-14)

  8. Forms of Logical Argument • Deduction (Matt. 22:23-33) • Reductio and absurdum (Matt. 12:22-30) • Logical dilemma (Jno. 8:1-11) • Argument a fortiori (Matt. 7:11)

  9. He Lived What He Taught • Dedication (Jno. 4:34; 15:10) • Compassion (Matt. 9:36-38; Jno. 8:11; 11:35) • Love (Jno. 13:35; 15:13) • Purity (Jno. 8:46) • Words (Matt. 12:36; 1 Pet. 2:21-23)

  10. Conclusion • There are many men who have something to say, but can’t say it so people will listen. • All of us can do better if we follow the example of Jesus.
