  1. Regents Review With Mr. Megna

  2. Absolutism • A system of government where a ruler has compete control over the lives of the people.

  3. Animism • The worship of sprits that are part of the natural environment.

  4. Agriculture • Using the land to produce crops and raise livestock; farming.

  5. Anthropologist • Social Scientist studies- people, their culture and the different ways of living and behavior.

  6. Anti-Semitism • Hostility and prejudice against Jews. • Appeasement- Satisfying an aggressor’s requests in the hope that no more harsh request will be made. (Example Germany WWII)

  7. Apartheid • A policy of segregation and political and economic discrimination against non-European groups in South America.

  8. Archipelago • A group of islands. Artifacts- Objects made by either had or machine representing a particular culture.

  9. Artisan • Trained or skilled worker; craftsman. Bushido- Japanese Samurai Code of Behavior; similar to the feudal code of behavior of the European Knights, called chivalry.

  10. Cash Crop • The chief agriculture product raised in an economy in order to sell and obtain income. (Main Good) Civilization- Level of development of a group; including food productivity ability, government, and methods of communication.

  11. Communism • Economic system where a single party controls the means of production with the Aim of establishing a classless society. A policy followed by the US during the Cold War to stop the spread of communism. Containment-

  12. Coup d’ etat • Sudden and violent overthrow of a government by a small group.

  13. Crusades • Military campaigns and pilgrimages by European Christians to win the Holy land from the Muslims. (1096-1204) Cultural Diffusion- Spread of cultural traits from one group to another.

  14. Culture • The customs beliefs, social forms, and material traits of an ethnic, religious, or social group. Custom- Usual ways of acting in a particular situation.

  15. Democracy • A political system in which the people participate in the making of their own laws or elect representatives to make the laws. Divine Right- The idea that God has given a ruler the right to rule.

  16. Excommunication • Process of expulsion from the Roman Catholic Church, usually because of disobedience and violation of Church rules and laws. Ethnic Cleansing- Act of persecuting members of an ethnic group by killing them or by removing them from an area.

  17. Feudalism • The political and economic system in which the vassal pledges loyalty and service to a lord in return for land and protection. A person under the protection of a feudal lord to whom he has vowed his loyalty and service; subordinate or follower. Vassal - Genocide- The destruction of a particular group of people.

  18. Laissez faire • The theory that government should intervene as little as possible in a nation’s economic affairs. Marxist- One who believes in socialism as a method of government.

  19. Prehistoric • Refers to a period of time prior to written history. The idea of using violence and fear of violence to gain an objective. Terraced farmland-
