  2.  Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth.  Gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on our teeth.  It is also called periodontal disease and is the major reason behind loss of tooth in elderly people. 96% of Canadian adults have a history of cavities.
