  1. Brushing your teeth is an important part of your oral care routine. For a healthy mouth and smile, you need to brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristle toothbrush. However, brushing your teeth more than the recommended time of 2 minutes can do more harm to your oral health than good. Here are some negative effects of over brushing your teeth: 1. Enamel Erosion By brushing your teeth hard or over-brushing your teeth, you may wear down the enamel – protective layer of your teeth. When enamel wears away, the sensitive dentin underneath is exposed, leading to tooth sensitivity.

  2. 2. Sensitive Teeth As mentioned above, brushing constantly can lead to tooth sensitivity. Having sensitive teeth is painful and can make you avoid certain types of foods and drinks. Symptoms of tooth sensitivity include sharp pain and discomfort while eating anything hot or cold. 3. Receding Gum Receding gums are often caused by over-brushing. Over-brushing damages the soft gum tissue, causing gums to recede over time. Signs of gum recession include tooth sensitivity and longer appearance of the teeth. • It is advised to choose a soft bristle toothbrush instead of a hard one and brush your teeth very gently for two minutes only.Gum recession can’t be reversed so consult a dental specialist to prevent further damage. • Over brushing can be detrimental to your teeth, gums, and oral health. The main purpose of brushing is to remove the plaque build-up from your teeth and gums. By over brushing you won’t be removing any extra plaque or achieve whiter looking teeth.
