  2. What is a Deadzone? • An area of the ocean that is depleted of oxygen, frequently due to pollution.

  3. Causes of Deadzones There are many causes for deadzones. One cause is the increase of chemical nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen. These chemical nutrients come from runoffs and fertilizers from factories and farms.

  4. More Causes of Deadzones • Natural causes that create deadzones are coastal upwellings (wind driven motion of dense,cooler, and nutrient rich waters towards the ocean surface, which replaces the warmer nutrient depleted water) • Another natural cause is the change in water & wind currents.

  5. How do deadzones affect the oceans and lakes? Deadzones affect oceans and lakes by making the enviroment unstable for many different species. it is uncapable for any species to live where a deadzone is located.

  6. How do dead zones affect the world? Dead zones affect the world by impacting aquaculture and fish farming. For example one red tide event wiped out 90 % of the entire stock of Hong Kong’s fish farms in 1998 , which resulted in a estimated 40 million dollar economic loss.

  7. Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico The dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico is the largest in the USA, while the largest dead zone in the world is in the baltic sea. Scientists predicted the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico would be 6700 square miles. About 1.7 million tonnes of potassium and nitrogen are put into the Gulf of Mexico every year.

  8. Baltic Sea Deadzone The Baltic sea dead zone is the biggest one on the planet. Over the last 40 years the average amount of total area of bottom considered dead zone is 49,000 squared kilometres.

Solutions • Dead zones are reversible and can be brought back to a stable life supporting enviroment again if nutrient rich pollutants stop getting dumped in the water. • Laws that limit the run off of pollutants from factories and banning fertilizers could help oxygen build up in the area and return it to normal.

Relations To GG12 • Chapter 6-Relates to pollution because pollution is a main cause of how dead zones are created. • Chapter 3-Nitrogen is a chemical nutrient that is involved with dead zones • Chapter 2– Show how we are all connected because we are all affected by dead zones especially because of the fishing industry for anyone who eats fish. • Chapter 9-10- Relates to resources because dead zones affects whether we get some resources or not.
