  3. EMIX does not define • How prices are determined • Market operations • Market structures

  4. Market [Software] Architecture Market Design and Description What Is Communicated - Price, Characteristics EMIX How It’s Communicated - Messages, Protocols Energy Interoperation

  6. Nodes must adapt automatically to market conditions • End Nodes • Commercial Buildings • Industrial facilities • Homes • Micro-grids • Electric transportation • … • Participants must automate interpretation of dynamic prices

  7. EMIX works with other developing standards • Energy Interoperation defines DR/DER signal semantics and protocols • IEC TC57 defines language of power management • FIX handles existing forward energy markets • WS-Calendar extends enterprise schedules to transacted services • Energy Interoperation TC builds on OpenADR and extends to DER

  8. National standards enable national markets for systems • Building automation systems • Energy storage management • Consumer investments in generation and storage • “Whole Foods markets” for energy A consistent model reduces costs of each implementation

  9. EMIX will be profiles for different markets • Light-weight profile for managed energy • Extensible profile for operation of buildings and micro-grids • High-speed profile for market trading and compound transactions
