Understanding Cisco’s Product Positioning • Cisco has capabilities to position multiple products in each category • Unsuspecting customers normally do not have an ‘apples to apples’ comparison due to Cisco’s strong marketing messaging and product complexity • Both Catalyst 6500 and 4500 switches can be configured with different capacity Supervisor Engines and NIs • Depending on what type of SE and NI combination, pricing and performance will be a factor • Alcatel sales needs to understand • Not all products are equal in features or price simply because it carries the same model product family

Catalyst 4500 • Catalyst 4500 can be configured with misleading options • Look for the following: • Type of Supervisor Engine • Sup I & Sup II – Low end (No fabric or management redundancy supported, limited L3 options) • Sup III – Standard performance (up to 30 Mpps), no fabric or management supported, centralized L3 supported at price premium • Sup II-PLUS+ & Sup IV – Better performance (up to 48 Mpps), supports redundancy in the 4507R chassis only; Sup II-PLUS($6K) does not support advanced L3 • Newest Sup V and V-10GE (best performance) supports the new 4510R chassis • Sup V ($16.5K) advanced L3 price premium ($10K) • Careful when competing against their pre-configured bundles • Low priced  configured with SupII-Plus-TS • Low performance  centralized bus architecture • Low availability  no options to support mgmt and fabric redundancy, small buffer support, and up to 8:1 oversubscription on GigE NIs
