  1. Alcatel OS7000 vs. Cisco Catalyst 4500 Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions Updated February 2005

  2. OmniSwitch 7000 – Wiring Closet • Converged wiring closet for the price of a basic one • Low cost of upgrade from L2 chassis wiring closet to full converge L2/L3/L4 switch • If only L2 required at the edge… Stacks are cheaper • Ideal for mission-critical & IP telephony • OneTouch QoS feature with Layer 2 thru 4 QoS classification • Continuous L2/L3 switching during CMM fail-over • Affordable Advanced Layer 3 upgrade option ($3K vs. ≥ $10K Cat 4500)

  3. Catalyst 4507R/4510R • Catalyst 4507R/4510R Strengths • Very cost effective at L2 and basic L3 • Positioned for convergence; VoIP/ Inline power • 72 Mpps forwarding and 96 Gbps backplane (with new Supervisor Engine V) • New Supervisor Engine V-10 able to support up two 10 Gigabit interfaces • List price $19,995 • Catalyst 4507R/4510R Weaknesses • High density cards significantly oversubscribe the backplane (8:1 GE NIs) • User interface (IOS) too complex for small IT departments • Centralized switching architecture (impacts QoS) • Price premium with higher-end SE and SSO redundancy options

  4. Wiring Closet Positioning Cisco Basic Wiring Closet L2, PSU redundancy (1300W PS) OmniSwitch 7700 144 10/100 + 2 Gig Catalyst 4500 144 10/100 + 2 Gig (SE II+) + Strong QoS, VLAN + OneTouch manageability + High performance + Designed for redundancy + Cost effective + Wide range of NIs - No fabric/management redundancy w/ 4506 4506 = $28.5K 4507R = $33.5K $26.6K Advanced Wiring Closet Enhanced L3, PSU redundancy (1300W PS) OmniSwitch 7700 144 10/100 + 2 Gig Catalyst 4500 144 10/100 + 2 Gig (SE V) + Wide range of NIs + HD in-line power module - No fabric/management redundancy w/ 4506 + Most cost effective + Wire-rate L2/L3/ACL/QoS/SLB/NAT 4506 = $49K 4507R = $54K $29.6K Converged Wiring Closet L3 , Full Hw redundancy (1300W PS) OmniSwitch 7700 144 10/100 + 2 Gig 4507R 144 10/100 + 2 Gig + Outstanding price position + Carrier class availability + Strong QoS, VLAN + Wire-rate L2/L3/ACL/QoS/SLB/NAT + Wide range of NIs + HD in-line power module $70.5K $35.8K

  5. Wiring Closet Upgradeability • Alcatel well positioned from basic to converged • Cisco appears attractive with 4506 and SE II+ at Layer 2 Basic Config • Adv L3 - SE II needs replacement w/ SE V and Adv IOS L3 image • Converged – 4506 needs to be replaced w/ 4507R and 2nd SE V added • Extreme needs to replace all hardware components from A3808 to BD6808 to support converged features

  6. Product Comparison:Converged Wiring Closet Switch • OmniSwitch 7700 Wiring Closet Switch - well positioned from basic to converged • Outstanding price position • Carrier class availability • Strong QoS (OneTouch), VLAN • Redundant base components include: fabrics, mgmt modules, and power supplies to support a fully loaded redundant chassis and advanced L3 option (144 10/100 + 2 GigE uplinks)

  7. Recent 4500 Product Releases & Understanding Catalyst 4500 Positioning

  8. Catalyst 4500 Recent Product Announcements • High impact product introductions • Supervisor Engine V - $16,495 • Catalyst 4510R chassis - $ 9,995 • SupV-10GE fixes slot 10 performance issues in 4510R chassis • Supervisor V-10GE(2x10GbE or 4xGbE) - $19,995 • Adds 10 Gigabit capability to the 4500 chassis • Integrated NetFlow support in hardware • Supervisor II-Plus-TS (12-port 10/100/1000 PoE+8 SFP) - $ 5,995 • Works in 4503 chassis only • Cisco’s Market Impact • Improving its edge positioning (extending the gap) • On performance, claiming 96Gbps with SupV and 136Gbps with SupV-10GE • On redundancy, supporting two SupII+ on the 4507R; two SupV(-10GE) in 4507R and 4510R with Stateful Switch Over (SSO) • Scalability, supporting 10 Gigabit uplinks at the edge of the network by adding the new SupV-10GE to existing 4500 installed base

  9. Understanding Cisco’s Product Positioning • Cisco has capabilities to position multiple products in each category • Unsuspecting customers normally do not have an ‘apples to apples’ comparison due to Cisco’s strong marketing messaging and product complexity • Both Catalyst 6500 and 4500 switches can be configured with different capacity Supervisor Engines and NIs • Depending on what type of SE and NI combination, pricing and performance will be a factor • Alcatel sales needs to understand • Not all products are equal in features or price simply because it carries the same model product family

  10. Catalyst 4500 • Catalyst 4500 can be configured with misleading options • Look for the following: • Type of Supervisor Engine • Sup I & Sup II – Low end (No fabric or management redundancy supported, limited L3 options) • Sup III – Standard performance (up to 30 Mpps), no fabric or management supported, centralized L3 supported at price premium • Sup II-PLUS+ & Sup IV – Better performance (up to 48 Mpps), supports redundancy in the 4507R chassis only; Sup II-PLUS($6K) does not support advanced L3 • Newest Sup V and V-10GE (best performance) supports the new 4510R chassis • Sup V ($16.5K) advanced L3 price premium ($10K) • Careful when competing against their pre-configured bundles • Low priced  configured with SupII-Plus-TS • Low performance  centralized bus architecture • Low availability  no options to support mgmt and fabric redundancy, small buffer support, and up to 8:1 oversubscription on GigE NIs

  11. Cat. 4500 - Supervisor options • Supervisor I (18Mpps, 24Gbps) - $6,995 (discontinued) • Support 4003 only • L2 only, no uplinks, no redundancy capability • Supervisor II (18Mpps, 24Gbps) - $5,995 (discontinued) • Support 4006, 4503, 4506 • L2 only, 2 GBIC uplinks, no redundancy capability • Supervisor II+ & II+-TS (48Mpps, 64Gbps) - $5,995 • Support 4006, 4503, 4506, 4507R (SEII+-TS only supported in 4503) • L2 & basic L3, 2 GBIC uplinks, redundancy capability on 4507R • Supervisor III (48Mpps, 64Gbps) - $14,995 (discontinued) • Support 4006, 4503, 4506 • L2/L3 ($10k license for adv L3), 2 GBIC uplinks, no redundancy capability • Supervisor IV (48Mpps, 64Gbps) - $11,995 • Support 4006, 4503, 4506, 4507R • L2/L3 ($10k license for adv L3), 2 GBIC uplinks, redundant capability on 4507R • Supervisor V (72Mpps, 96Gbps) - $16,495 • Support 4006, 4503, 4506, 4507R, 4510R • L2/L3 ($10k license for adv L3), 2 GBIC uplinks, redundant capability on 4507R & 4510R • Supervisor V-10GE (102Mpps, 136Gbps) -$19,995 • Supported in 4500 chassis only (fixes performance issues on slot 10 of 4510R chassis) • Integrated NetFlow support

  12. Differences between SupII+, SupIV & SupV(10GE) • Supervisor 2+ is a scaled down version of Supervisor IV & V • Advanced routing cost: • ENHANCED L3 Cat4500 SUPIV/V (OSPF,EIGRP,IS-IS) $10K • SUP IV/V InterDomain Routing License (BGP) $5K • NetFlow hardware support embedded in SE-V-10GE, optional daughter in other SEs
