Today’s Agenda • Go over homework; extra credit reminders; mention midterm information (online) • Today’s class presentation: • Kristin Harper: The Court & Courtly Love • Highlights of Sir Thomas Hoby’s translation of Castiglione’s The Courtier 645-61; • Stress the importance of Petrarch and point out key characteristics of his sonnets (see link online under the sixteenth century) • Introduce Petrarch’s fan club: Wyatt & Surrey • See Wyatt’s “The long love” and Petrarch’s Rima 140 (594-95), “Whoso list” and Petrarch’s Rima 190 (595), “Farewell, Love” (596), “I find no peace” and Petrarch’s Rima 134; • H. Henry, Earl of Surrey: “Love, that doth reign” (609).
