  1. Physics for the MassesRamamurti Shankar, Yale University, DMR 0901903 For quite some time, my research has focused on things quantum mechanical: quantum phase transitions, quantum Hall effect and quantum dots. Hence I have tried very hard to make quantum physics accessible to the general public. One route has been to give a public lecture called “When you come to a fork in the road take it! -Yogi-Berra’s guide to the quantum world. “ To hear this talk given at the Boulder Summer School see http://boulder.research.yale.edu/Boulder-2008/Lectures/index.html#today This talk explains the Sum over Paths version of quantum mechanics due Feynman and touches on quantum computers. Please insert an image or group of images here. If you need more space, you may reduce the adjacent textbox. Please use lettering that is clearly visible (i.e. not too small). You could also insert chemical or mathematical formulas, molecular models, etc. Visually appealing images that can be appreciated by non-experts are most desirable, but feel free to use whatever is appropriate. Please include a very brief caption for the figures.

  2. More physics for the publicRamamurti Shankar, Yale University, DMR 0901903 After quantum mechanics, I decided to develop a popular lecture on special relativity. The public of course wants to go straight to the general theory, because of the immense and universal interest in cosmology but first they need to understand the special theory. This summer I gave the 2010 Heinz Pagels lecture at the Aspen Center for Physics entitled “From 0 to c in 60 minutes: a crash course in Einstein using planes trains and automobiles.” You can see it at (http://vod.grassrootstv.org/vodcontent/9333-1.wmv) This site also links to two more Aspen lectures given to kids. For an audience that wants more details, the first half of my Yale course Introduction to Physics was posted on line two years ago and is available on YouTube, iTunes or better still http://oyc.yale.edu/physics/fundamentals-of-physics which contains problem sets, exams, all solutions and supplemental notes. The second part will be out this Fall. For a coverage of that course in the New York Times please visit the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/18/education/edlife/18open-t.html?ref=edlife
