Transcendentalism • an intellectual movement that emphasized the dignity of the individual and advocated a simple, mindful life. • The transcendentalists wanted to transcend – or go beyond – the limitations of the senses and everyday experience. • Transcendentalists believed in disregarding external authority in favor of one’s own experience and intuition.

  3. Self-Reliance and Intuition • A person in tune with nature, spirituality, and individuality can teach themselves. • Your intuition and individualism outweighs outside authority and blind conformity to custom and tradition. • Do things on your own. Learn from these experiences.

  4. Allure of the Wilderness (nature) • Nature is sacred. • The physical facts of the natural world are a doorway to the spiritual or ideal world. Seek solitude in nature (the best way to escape society). • Taking time to experience nature can lead to enlightenment.

  5. Individualism and Non-comformity • Don't conform to society just to "fit in" because society corrupts a person's inner goodwill. Examples of corruption: slavery, oppressive religions, lack of women's rights, etc..

  6. Civil Disobedience • Individuals have a duty and moral obligation to stop injustice • If laws or the actions of the government infringe on rights and beliefs, the people should "civilly" disrupt/protest.

  7. Simplicity • People do not need material objects to be happy. • The simpler the life, the more content one can be with himself or herself
