  3. I hate Napoleon (the place) • A person from Napoleon went to the Dr. with 2 red ears. “What happened?” asked the Dr. • “I was ironing when the phone rang and instead of picking up the phone I put the iron to my ear.” • “What about the other ear?” the Dr. asked. “The person called back.”

  4. Background • Born in Corsica, a French ruled island • Joined the Army, moved up quickly • Won many battles, hid his losses

  5. Politically • Switched from Military to Politician • Became part of a 3 ruler system • Became most powerful and made himself Emperor • During Coronation, he took the crown from the Pope

  6. Also called "Short Man syndrome", "Little Man syndrome" or "Small Man syndrome". What was originally called the "Napoleon complex" is a term used in referring to people who are short in stature with a complex regarding that stature. It also refers to people who are very competitive due to height constraints.One Dictionary describes it thus: An angry male of below the average height who feels it necessary to act out in an attempt to gain respect and recognition from others to compensate for his abnormally short stature. • Napoleon Complex

  7. Things he did for France • Held Plebiscites (yes or no votes) • Controlled prices • Encouraged new industry • Built roads and canals • Set up system of public schools • Allowed religious freedom

  8. Napoleonic Code • Followed Enlightenment ideas • Equality of citizens before the law • Religious toleration • Advancement based on merit • Women lost some rights (men controlled household)

  11. Problems • Nationalism—strong pride in one’s country • People didn’t want a foreign country to rule them • Guerilla warfare—hit and run raids—ambush and run

  12. Invasion of Russia • Dumb, Dumb, Dumb • Grand Army (400,000 men) attacked Russia • Russia used “scorched earth” tactic • No food, shelter • French retreated with 10,000 survivors

  13. Nasty • Temperatures as low as -40 • Built shelters from corpses • A battlefield, “was covered with debris and 30,000 corpses half eaten by wolves.”

  14. Downfall of Napoleon • An alliance of countries attacked and won • Napoleon abdicated (stepped down) • Exiled to Elba • Depression for France, Napoleon back • Lasted 100 days, the alliance came back, defeated Napoleon at Waterloo • Exiled to St. Helena (died)
