We know the imperfect past tense is a past used when talking about: • Weather (Ayer estaballoviendo.) • Age (Cuandoyoteníadiezaños.) • Time (Eranlas dos de la tarde.) • USED TO DO (De niñayojugaba con muñecas.) • Periodically (Túpracticabastodos los días.) • Physical / personality description (Ella era bonita y inteligente.) • Emotions (Ellosestabanmuycontentos.)

  3. Lee lasoraciones. Subraya los verbos. • Mis parientes y yo charlábamos cuando la fiesta empezó. • Cuando llegaron sus padres Luz contaba chistes. • Marta comía galletas cuando le dieron los regalos. • La bebé jugaba cuando su abuela entró.

  4. Take a minute to translate the sentences. • My parents and I were talking when the party began. • When Luz’s parent arrived, she was telling jokes. • Marta was eating cookies when they gave her gifts. • The baby was playing when her grandma came in. • What does the imperfect verb seem to represent? • What does the preterit verb seem to represent?

  5. The imperfect tense is also used to tell what someone was doing(imperfect) when something else happened (preterite). Mis parientes charlaban (imperfect) cuando mi mamá entró (preterite). My relatives were chatting (imperfect) when my mother came in (preterite).

  6. Yo hablaba por teléfono cuando la pizza llegó. 2. Mis parientes y yo charlábamos cuando la fiesta empezó. 3. Cuando empezó la película yo iba a comprar un refresco. 4. Cuando llegó Ana los primos comían una pizza. 5. Luisa y Mariana bailaban cuando la fiesta terminó.

  7. Notice that it doesn’t matter which verb comes first in the sentence. The imperfect can be first or the preterit can be! Just be aware of what you are trying to say.

  8. interrupted ongoing In the examples, “cuando” was used to indicate that one action _____________ an ___________ action. But you don’t ALWAYS have to have an interrupted action. Use “mientras” to describe actions that were happening simultaneously. Yohacía la tarea mientras mi hermano practicaba beisbol. Mientras que yo hablaba por teléfono, mi mamá preparaba la cena. In theseexamples, wehavesimultaneousimperfectactions.
