  2. Purpose of Today’s Presentation • To summarize the Consensus Symposium with respect to objectives, assumptions, questions, and themes. • To look ahead to the anticipated outcomes and benefits of the Consensus Symposium. • To introduce our featured speakers on the major symposium themes.

  6. Objectives of the Consensus Symposium • To examine current evidence concerning the identified leisure issues and topics. • To achieve general agreement (“consensus”) on the extent of support for claims that leisure is a key component of human development and well-being.

  8. Assumptions of The Consensus Symposium • Leisure is integral to the social, cultural and economic development of developing and developed societies alike. • Perceptions of leisure and its value vary. • Research-based evidence varies in quality and quantity.

  9. The Consensus seeks to identify… • What we know and do not know about each major topic. • What are the theoretical and methodological limitations and weaknesses of current research.

  10. The Consensus seeks to identify • What important theoretical and/or research questions have not been addressed, or fully addressed, in order to generate a future research agenda. • What “evidence” is available for establishing future and sound policy-making and program development.

  11. Central Question #1 • To what extent does leisure contribute to desirable societal outcomes at various levels: • Individual and family • City and community • Regionally • Nationally • Globally • Is there Evidence?
