  1. Sustainability in Waupun Continuing the goal of 25% renewable energy by 2025 Renee Henning 2012 Wisconsin Sustainability Intern Program

  2. Projects • Immediately Implemented • Energy Miser • Museum Boiler Pipes • City Hall Attic Insulation • Museum Attic Insulation • Building Light Upgrade • Street and Park Light Upgrade • Greenhouse Gas Reduction

  3. Turn Down City Hall Break Room Water Heater • The 6 gallon water heater in the break room was heating water to 140 °F. • Turned down to 120 °F • Conserve 6-10% of water heating costs (EPA) • Prevent burns

  4. Unplug Appliances • Except for refrigerators, unplug energy consumers that are not being used. They may consume energy even when turned off.

  5. Project Priority by Payback

  6. Energy Miser • Reduces electrical use • Uses Passive Infrared Occupancy Sensor to turn off • Monitors ambient temperature to ensure cold product • Reduces compressor cycles to prolong life of machine • In unoccupied 90 °F test chamber, reduced electricity by nearly 50% while not affecting drink temperature Photo courtesy of EnergyMiserStore.com

  7. Energy Miser Savings Based on findings by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory

  8. Energy Miser Payback There are 7 soda machines at parks and 1 at city hall The total cost is $992 *Focus on Energy

  9. Museum Boiler Pipe Insulation • Heat from the steam conducts onto the pipe and then conducts into the surrounding air • Insulation will keep the heat in the steam • Heat lost from the pipe can overheat an area, and waste energy • Heat may not reach where it is needed because it dissipates into the air • Insulation can reduce the energy lost from the system by 90%2

  10. Museum Boiler Pipe Insulation The pipes are not insulated

  11. Museum Boiler Pipe Insulation Boiler room pipes are patched in all cases Yearly savings based on reduced insulating values and smaller pipes on average *Focus on Energy

  12. Insulate City Hall and Museum Attic EPA estimates that 20% of heating and cooling costs, or 10% of the electrical costs, can be saved through sealing and insulating a typical house1.

  13. City Hall Attic Insulation City Hall has no insulation

  14. City Hall Attic Insulation Using Average Cost of Bids Using Lowest Bid Cost *Focus on Energy

  15. Museum Attic Insulation Museum has initial insulation of R9 due to its condition

  16. Museum Attic Insulation

  17. Museum Attic Insulation Using Average Cost of Bids Using Lowest Bid Cost *Focus on Energy

  18. Alliant Shared Savings Program • A loan that is paid back with the energy savings over a maximum of 5 years • 3% Administration Fee • Can combine the City Hall and Museum projects for a larger contract amount • It can be paid off early with no penalty • Allows “shared savings” when the loan payment is less than the energy savings

  19. Building Lights Project

  20. Reflective Delamping Before After Still 48 foot candles at waist height

  21. Building Lights Project *Focus on Energy

  22. Building Maintenance Costs • Bill Ganz Electric pays its employees $60 an hour • Total Maintenance Cost: $3,000 Total Fixture and Maintenance Cost: $28,213.19

  23. Street and Park Light Project

  24. Street and Park Light Project Changing lights to energy efficient LED

  25. Street Light Maintenance Costs • Randy Posthuma (WPPI) estimated $300 for change out to LED per fixture • Total Maintenance Cost $238,800 Total Fixture and Maintenance Cost $527,414

  26. Greenhouse Gas Reduction

  28. Thank you to the employees of the City of Waupun and to SHWEC for all the support. A special thanks to my faculty advisor, Jonathan Rivin, for all his advice.
