  1. V alue VALUE is the darkness or lightness of a color. Lighter colors are called TINTS. Tints are made by adding white to a color. Darker colors are called SHADES. Shades are made by adding black to a color. This painting was made using tints and shades of blue. It is MONOCHROMATIC. Monochromatic art uses tints and shades of one color.

  2. VALUE can also be used in a drawing. This drawing uses SHADING to add shadows that make these hands look very realistic.

  3. Making a color less bright is called MUTING a color. To MUTE a color, mix a small amount of its complementary color into it. In this painting small amounts of purple were added to the yellow in the tree to soften or mute the yellow.
