  1. University Application

  2. “If a man does not know to what port he is sailing, no wind is favourable.” - Cicero “The wisest men follow their own direction.” - Euripides

  3. Ugly facts • increasing competition and standards • increasing costs of study • education is becoming purely functional • international competition from the East • increasing wealth theft by the very rich • no careers-for-life any more • decreasing worker rights

  4. A bright future You are • able and IT-skilled • internationalists • in an interconnected world • creative and excited by opportunity • well-supported and advised • young

  5. Me vs You… Changing times • no idea of course choice • one idea of university • no placement or work experience • limited broader experiences and CV • shocking absence of meaningful advice Of course, I was straight grade A… how good are you?

  6. Deciding next stages • choose GCSEs with A-levels in mind • … A-levels with degree in mind… • … degree with Masters or job in mind… or you are “driving in fog.” So you must research not ONLY degrees, but JOBS too – and RIGHT NOW.

  7. Research • universities + courses + modules • industry links + employment rates • career routes + PG / corporate entry • FEES • lifestyle issues • student commentaries • OPEN DAYS

  8. Advisors and entry • present options and use them as a sounding board… they are not there to know specific answers for you • they will not make choices for you • sample multiple inputs and “crowd source” • all are equal… some more equal than others? • uni Admissions Tutors are variable, unpredictable and there are hidden / political “best fit” factors

  9. Sooner is better This is a reflective process and must percolate. “Quick decisions are unsafe decisions.” - Sophocles Start now or you will time out. “Try out” the feeling of certain options. Change your mind all you like.

  10. Decisions before decisions • how much does money matter to you? • are you sure? • which country? are you sure? • what is your criterion – course, uni type, city, career, reputation? • structure of course – sandwich, vocational, projects, academic? • degree, foundation or work?

  11. Value of a degree • some industries need Masters • some unis are worth more than others • 2:1 or 1st is really important (2:2 is not good) • is your career route possibly better just from experience? • you can always be a mature student later…

  12. Tailored applications (general) • welcome to the jungle… raw competition • identify the right academic level • improve your A-level work RIGHT NOW • teachers will not lie to help you • … but aim (reasonably) high Are you Oxbridge, Russell, selecting, or recruiting standard of student?

  13. Context and competition • sports • outward-bound • service • culture • leadership • work • charity Do you think teachers are paid for all they do?

  14. Tailored applications (specific) ALL COURSES ARE NOT THE SAME. What is YOUR PARTICULAR future? How does this offer HELP YOU? You are an applicant but also a CUSTOMER.

  15. Take responsibility • lectures / seminars / tutorials • listen / learn independently • self-motiviation… Cicero again • timetable / attendance record? • pastoral support / discipline / detention • NB “my reference will say I am…” • time management and temptation… eg…

  16. In my first 2 terms I… • rowed, fenced, played rugby, football, American football, tennis, squash, badminton, kayaking • took part in debating and drama competitions • got elected to the student union • became a good quality journalist • set up the largest theatre festival in the history of my university • made incredible friends & socialised continuously • … and very nearly failed my first year exams.

  17. You are about to enter the most amazing period of your life. Whether the rest of your life afterwards is interesting and suitable, or whether it’s an uphill nightmare, depends on how well you prepare for that period ahead of you.

  18. TASK: first thoughts • split into 2 random groups with LKE and BRO • have a large circle discussion (chair it yourselves) • how do we feel after those initial thoughts / info? • shocks / motivators / new ideas? • where are different individuals at in this process? • choose to form working groups of 3-5 • on what basis? why? • what targets will you set yourselves first? • what help or input would you like from whom? • nominate report-back people for last 5 mins
