Discussion • Explain how this activity can compare to communication. • What does listening have to do with communication? • How hard do we listen to others? • List some of the people you really listen to. • Why is it important to listen to others? • How can poor listening lead to disagreements? • How does it make you feel when you aren’t listened to? • When someone really listens to you, how does that make you feel?

  20. Part 1: Teacher to class • Each student will need 1 of their sheets of paper • Teacher will show the following image for 30 seconds • After 30 seconds you have 2 minutes to draw the image shown • No talking to others including your partner

  21. Drawing Time You have 2 minutes

Partner time • With your partner chose who will draw and who will talk • The drawer steps away from the sight of the teacher and picture (around corner inside room) while the talker looks at the next picture the teacher shows for 30 seconds. Teacher then puts the picture away. • The drawer comes back in and on the other piece of white paper the drawer (with their eyes closed) draws what the talker tells them to draw which is what they saw the teacher hold up. The talker may not use hand motions or non-verbal cues, just talking.(4 minutes to draw)

On your own paper • How well did you do drawing the first picture by yourself? • Explain what made it hard to draw the first picture. • How well did you draw the picture with your eyes closed when someone was helping you? • Was it difficult or easy to follow the other person’s directions, and why? • How easy was it to give the directions to your partner for them to draw? What made it hard or easy? • How well did your partner follow your directions? • How easy is it to explain something to someone else? • How easy is it to understand what others tell us? • Describe a situation where getting the exact directions would be very important. • Have you ever heard of a situation where communication has not been clear and a misunderstanding resulted? • Have any of your friends gotten mad because of something they thought they heard and later it turned out the person really didn’t say that? Describe a situation like this. • Why is clear communication important? • What kinds of problems does confusing communication create? • What can we do to make sure our communication is clear?
