  4. Division of Labour Different types of cells are suited to perform different functions in the living organism This is called division of labour Think: Why is division of labour necessary?

  5. Division of Labour Division of labour increases the efficiency of the system Faster; less wastage of energy, time and materials Cells have special features or adaptations to help them perform their specific functions

Division of labour Red Blood Cells • Function: transport oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body • They are able to do this because they have a few adaptations. • Adaptations: • Contains a red pigment called haemoglobin which binds to oxygen to allow oxygen to be transported • NO nucleus (anucleated) so more haemoglobin can be packed into the cell to carry more oxygen

  7. Division of labour Root hair cells found in plants Function: absorption of water and mineral salts from the soil. Adaptation: has long narrow outgrowths to increase surface area for faster absorption

  8. Division of labour Palisade cellsfound in leaf of plants Function: Carry out photosynthesis Adaptation: Has numerous chloroplasts which contain the green pigmentchlorophyll to carry out photosynthesis.
