  1. Physical Properties of Matter Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Physical Properties are properties of matter that can be observed or measured without changing an object, or any of the material it is made of, into something else.

  2. Observable Properties • Observable properties are things that can be taken in using your five senses. Examples: Color, size, shape, smell, texture, melting point, and … ________________________________________________________________________________________________

  3. Measurable Properties 4.Measurable properties can be answered with a number and units. Example: 50 pounds, 3 inches, 12 ounces, and … ______________________________________________________________________________________________________

  4. 5.Texture is how the surface of a substance feels. • Ductility is the ability of a substance to be pulled into thin threads without breaking. • Buoyancy is the ability to float in a liquid or rise in a gas.

  5. DENSITY! 8.Densityis the amount of mass that fits in a given volume. 9.Density = Mass***density is measured in grams per cubic centimeter. Volume 10. The more dense, the less buoyant. The less dense, the more buoyant.

  6. Physical Changes 11. When a substance goes through a physical change, some of its physical properties may change, but it does not become a different substance.
