  2. Background • I-TECH funded by HRSAandHHS/CDC-GAP in April 2002 at University of Washington in Seattle • Principal Investigator: King K. Holmes, MD, PhD • Joint project with University of California San Francisco • Additional funds from USAID since 2003 for work in the Caribbean • Principal Investigator: Ann Downer, MS, EdD • Caribbean Field Manager: June Alleyne Griffin • Work in 25 countries worldwide • ~225 employees, ~50 employees in Seattle • 10 field offices • ~120 partnerships and vendors

Mandate Increase human and institutional capacity for effective care and treatment of HIV/AIDS: • Building infrastructure for long-term delivery of effective training and health care services • Increasing human capacity in program management, clinical care, instructional design, information management, monitoring and evaluation • Promoting transfer of learning from classroom to practice through clinical mentoring and long-term decision support • Providing support for implementation of continuous quality management practices

Highlights • Support for Sustainable M&E Systems at CHART Centres (RCU, Jamaica, Bahamas, Barbados) • Trinidad & Tobago National Training Center (NTC) becoming a reality • “A Successful Collaborative Effort to Train Health Care Workers in PMTCT in the Caribbean” Abstract Accepted at the Global Health Council's 34th Annual International Conference on Global Health, Partnerships: Working Together for Global Health. • Bahamas National PMTCT Curriculum Launch. Nassau, Bahamas Feb. 19-23, 2007. • TB/HIV Coinfection Initiative -- New initiative partnering CAREC, CHART, I-TECH and Curry Center

Training Materials Materials developed in the Caribbean in collaboration with CHART and other partners: • PMTCT Curricula -- Generic Regional and Bahamas • Continuum of Care for Mothers, Infants and Families • Caribbean HIV & AIDS Pocket Guide for Nurses • Stigma & Discrimination Trigger Video Curriculum for the Monitoring and Evaluation of Training Programs • Group Education Package (VCT) • Core Competencies Database

  9. OECS • Support capacity development needs in the subregion that will ensure quality care and treatment for people living with HIV and AIDS • Strengthen links with CHART and other national, regional, and international programs and resources

Activities • Capacity Development Program Development • Training Coordinator -- part of the OECS HAPU team • Support for GFATM Phase II Request for Continued Funding -- working with RCM and HAPU • National Training Focal Points for each OECS country • Verification of Training Needs -- Clinical Mentoring -- Leadership and Management in the Health Sector

  11. Suriname • A joint CHART/I-TECH exploratory mission to Suriname is planned for late March.

  12. Guyana National Training & Coordinating Centre Background • Established 2005 • Budget approximately $268,500/year • Implemented in collaboration with FXB • Staff of four to carry out activities • Close collaboration with Health Sciences Education Unit

  13. Objectives • Coordinate HIV-related training in Guyana among many partners • Develop standardized curricula and materials • Provide high quality HIV training and capacity development for health care workers

  14. Key Accomplishments • GYNTCC advisory board established • HIV.gov.gy website complete and updated • 153 HCW trained (April 2006 – January 2007) • Quarterly National HIV training calendar • Draft National Curricula for Nurses, Dentist, Pharmacists

  15. Way Forward for GYNTCC • Finalize curricula for nurses, dentists, pharmacists, and multidisciplinary teams • Increased focus on pre-service integration • Work with MOH to complete National Training Plan • TIMS roll out as national training information system • Consider improving Caribbean-regional linkages

Projections for 2007(I-TECH Caribbean) • Expand Clinical Support • Provide M&E Support for OECS and Haiti • Develop Caribbean ARV Curriculum • Finalize Core Competencies Database • Develop Performance Standards • Complete Mid-Term Evaluation • Continue/Expand Support for OECS Training • Implement Tb/HIV Coinfection Activities • Collaborate with MEASURE to Expand Usefulness of HSPA Data
