Ch. 9 The Federalist Era STUDY GUIDE Vocabulary: precedent national debt alien cabinet impressment sedition bond partisan nullify tariff implied powers caucus states’ rights Test Th 2/27 • Know the Following: • Know the year Washington was inaugurated as our first President • Know who the Cabinet members were in Washington’s Administration • Know the importance of the Judiciary Act of 1789 • Know how Hamilton dealt with our national debt (problems with bonds, know the Southern states’ objections to Hamilton’s plan, Hamilton’s compromise) • Know the importance of the National Bank; issues surrounding it (implied power) • Know the reasons for imposing tariffs • Know why the Whiskey Rebellion happened and why some considered it proof that we had become a stronger nation since the Articles of Confederation • Know why the problems with Europe posed a challenge to Washington and how he dealt with the challenges • Know the Neutrality Proclamation and the British act of aggression against US ships • Know Jay’s Treaty and Pinckney’s Treaty • Know the problems the US had with Indians in the Northwest Territory and how the problems were addressed; who fought; Treaty of Greenville • Know the precedents Washington set during his presidency • Know the major differences between the Federalists and the Democratic- Republicans --- study the table • Know the major facts of the 1796 election • Know the XYZ Affair in detail • Know all of the details of the Alien and Sedition Acts including the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions (class discussion: the “supposed” reason and the “real” reason for it) Good Luck...
