Double Entendre • Definition: a word/phrase capable of two interpretations, with one usually being sexual. • Examples: • The ladies of the Walnut Street Mission have discarded clothes. They invite you to come and inspect them. • GRATIANO. We’ll play with them the first boy for a thousand ducats. NERISSA. What, and stake down? GRATIANO. Pun • Definition: a form of word play which suggests multiple meanings of words or similar sounding words. • Examples: • Did you hear about these new reversible jackets? I’m excited to see how they turn out. • I used to have a fear of hurdles, but I got over it.

Malapropism • Substituting a similar sounding word for the correct word for humorous purposes. • Examples: • GOBBO. He hath a great infection, sir, as one would say, to serve [you, Bassanio] • Infection SHOULD be affection=desire

The Rack • The rack is commonly considered the most painful form of medieval torture. It was a wooden frame usually above ground with two ropes fixed to the bottom and another two tied to a handle in the top. • The torturer turned the handle causing the ropes to pull the victim's arms. Eventually, the victim's bones were dislocated with a loud crack. If the torturer kept turning the handles, some of the limbs were torn apart, usually the arms. • This method was mostly used to extract confessions, as not confessing meant that the torturer could stretch more. Sometimes, torturers forced their victim to watch other people be tortured with this device to implant psychological fear.
