  1. God’s Holy Days William J.D. Shaw

  2. Reinforcement of Key way forward • Always check what anyone tells you against the Bible – use critical evaluation • Recall God’s Nature, place it in the forefront of your mind • Learn the culture and society at the time the Bible was written in order to better understand • There is power in reading the word (when led by the Holy Spirit), the power comes in combination with prayer and obedience • Open your mind, get rid of preconceived ideas • Gather scripture together on the same subject • Do not overly intellectualize, usually the word is straight forward in what it says, use rational and logic and not emotion • The definition of the words of Hebrew and Greek is extremely important • When in doubt, follow Jesus sayings and examples

  3. Introduction to the Holy Days • These are Holy Days of God, not of Israelites or of Man • The days are tied to God’s calendar • There are 8 annual occurrences • Most have a Holy Convocation - Also called ; a High Day, or an annual Sabbath • In addition within two Holy Days, contain a weekly Sabbath • These annual Holy Days are tied to prophecy • These are also know as feasts of the Lord or assembly to the Lord

  4. God’s Calendar • The months are based upon the start of a full new moon • The number of days in a month are 30 • The complete day always starts at Sunset and finishes at the following sunset • the night comes first and then the day portion, approx 12 hours for each, sunset to sunrise and sunrise to sunset • The first month of the year for man is that of Nisan - for 2018 this month starts on March 16 at sunset (God’s new year for man starts on the first day of this month of Nisan) • Generally the day of the week on which the Holy Days occur changes every year, • exception being those specified to always be on the first day of the week

  5. Listing of the Holy Days • 1. Passover, Nisan 14th • 2. Unleavened Bread, Nisan 15th to 22, 7 days • 3. First Fruits, first day of week within the 7 days of Unleavened Bread • 4. Feast of Weeks or Pentecost, count 7 weekly Sabbaths from just before First Fruits plus one day • 5. Trumpets, 7th month on first day of month • 6. Day of Atonement, 10th day of 7th month • 7. Feast of Booths or Tabernacles, 15th day of 7th month, 7days long • 8. The Last Great Day, the day following the end of the Tabernacles

  6. Days Described as Being Forever • Passover Exo 12:14  And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.  • Unleavended Bread Lev 23:6  And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread. • Firstfruits Lev 23:14  And ye shall eat neither bread, nor parched corn, nor green ears, until the selfsame day that ye have brought an offering unto your God: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.  • Pentecost Lev 23:21  And ye shall proclaim on the selfsame day, that it may be an holy convocation unto you: ye shall do no servile work therein: it shall be a statute for ever in all your dwellings throughout your generations.

  7. Trumpets Lev 23:24  Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation.  • Atonement Lev 23:31  Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.  • Tabernacles Lev 23:41  And ye shall keep it a feast unto the LORD seven days in the year. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations: ye shall celebrate it in the seventh month.  • Last Great Day Lev 23:39  Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days: on the first day shall be a sabbath, and on the eighth day shall be a sabbath.

  8. Jesus as well as Paul Kept the Holy Days • Jesus kept the Holy Days - before the resurrection; Passover, Unleavened Bread, First Fruits, Tabernacles, Last Great Day. - after the resurrection; First Fruits, instructions to disciples to assemble on Pentecost • Paul kept; the above plus Atonement • Only one missing is Trumpets

  9. Keeping the Holy Days • These are God’s Holy Days and are tied to prophecy • Some appear complete, many are yet to be fulfilled • They are commanded as being forever, until God tells us differently – they will be kept in the millennium • Jesus reinforced keeping them • These days are to be kept at the times they were given – not during man’s “holidays” especially in conflict with God’s Laws • Dan 7:25  And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

  10. One other Holy Day • When the Holy Days were given in Leviticus one other was included at the beginning - as follows; • Feasts of the Lord • Lev 23:1  And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,  • Lev 23:2  Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.  • The Sabbath Lev 23:3  Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.  • A weekly Holy Day

  11. Sabbaths • There are weekly Sabbaths, 52/yr • There are annual Sabbaths, 7/yr • These are all God’s Holy Days • Mat 15:3  But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?  • Mat 15:9  But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

  12. Passover • Spilled blood, death passing over • Being taken out of Egypt (taken out of sin) • Initially a lamb, later Jesus spilled blood • Timing - Nisan 14th, in the evening • Now communion instigated by Jesus, bread & wine • Originally eating the lamb and bitter herbs • It is not an annual Sabbath • Now having our sins covered with Jesus blood and being offered eternal life

  13. Unleavened Bread • Starting in the evening of Nisan 15th, an Annual Sabbath • Not eating any leavened bread, leaven is used as representing sin, a puffing up of the mind • Lasts for 7 days, with the last day also being an Annual Sabbath • We require God’s help to keep sin out of our lives (7 day memorial of having God’s laws firmly in our mind) • Remove physical and spiritual sin from our lives

  14. First Fruits • This is the first day of the week immediately after the weekly Sabbath contained within the 7 days of unleavened bread • The first fruits are the spring harvest, waiving them before God and giving thanks. They are waived by the chief Priest. • This is done in the day portion of the first day of the week as identified from above, this is not an annual Sabbath • After Jesus was resurrected, He waived himself before the Father as the first fruit of the resurrected, waived by Himself being our new Chief Priest • Joh 20:17  Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.

  15. Summary of first 3 Holy Days • Passover – Nisan 14th, night portion was communion, day portion was the crucifixion and death of Jesus • Unleavened Bread – Nisan 15th through Nisan 21st. This period contains 3 Sabbaths, two annual and one weekly • Resurrection, Nisan 17 , occurs within days of Unleavened Bread • First Fruits – First day of the week after weekly Sabbath within the 7 days of Unleavened Bread • Note – the days of the week upon which the specific Holy Days above occur changes every year, only exception is First Fruits. • The commandments of man are Easter, with key days being Friday and Sunday in opposition to the above days set by God

  16. Pentecost • Also know as feast of weeks as a result of counting of weeks • It is always on the first day of the week, a one day event • It is an annual Sabbath • Represents the summer harvest • Represents the giving of the Torah (the Law) • Now the day that the Holy Spirit was given to the disciples and the start of Jesus congregation (church) • It has not as yet been fulfilled, likely the gathering of the saints

  17. Trumpets • A one day event • An annual Sabbath • A day of blowing shofars and trumpets. Assembly, warning, announcements, war, walls of Jericho • A day of repentance in continuance with Atonement • Represents the anniversary of God starting His creation • Likely it represents the Great and terrible day of the Lord, the plagues poured out upon the earth

  18. Atonement • This is a one day (evening + day) event • It is an annual Sabbath • A time of 24hr fasting, no food or drink • A day of prayer and being at one with God • A day of repentance, regeneration and thanking God for His Mercy and Grace in forgiving our sins • Possibly a day where the eyes of Israel will be opened

  19. Tabernacles • This is a 7 day event • The first day is an annual Sabbath • A time of rejoicing and thanksgiving • A celebration of the fall harvest of man • One is to live in temporary shelters over these days • Likely the birth of Jesus occurred within these days • Represents the time of the Israelites living in the wilderness, being taken care of by God • It also represents the millennium, God’s will on earth

  20. Last Great Day • This is the day following the 7 days of Tabernacles, it is an annual Sabbath • The number 8 is a new beginning, at the end of the millennium • It is the second resurrection, the final Judgement, the great fall harvest of God • The day of destruction of all God’s enemies • The day of the start of the new earth and new heavens • The day of the new Jerusalem

  21. Come before the Lord 3 times a year • The Feasts • Unleavened bread (Spring Harvest) • Pentecost (Summer Harvest) • Tabernacles (Fall harvest) • All the males to appear before the Lord • All are to bring a gift • The location shall be chosen by God • In the millennium it will be in Jerusalem

  22. Are these Holy Days only for the Jews ? • They are God’s Holy Days • If you are one of God’s set apart ones, they are for you • God’s chosen people are a group of both Jews (Israel) and Gentiles (Nations) • They were kept in the past, will be kept in the future, logic tells us they should be kept today – as best as we can

  23. God’s Chosen people • Lev 24:22  Ye shall have one manner of law, as well for the stranger, as for one of your own country: for I am the LORD your God.  • Num 15:16  One law and one manner shall be for you, and for the stranger that sojourneth with you.  • Rom 11:17  And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;  • Rom 1:16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. • Rom 10:12  For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.  • Gal 3:26  For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.  • Gal 3:27  For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.  • Gal 3:28  There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.  • Gal 3:29  And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. • Col 3:11  Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

  24. During the millennium • Zec 14:16  And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.  • Zec 14:17  And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain.  • Zec 14:18  And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.  • Zec 14:19  This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.

  25. All that are left of the Nations • Isa 66:20  And they shall bring all your brethren for an offering unto the LORD out of all nations upon horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and upon swift beasts, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, saith the LORD, as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the LORD. • Isa 66:23  And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD • Mic 4:2  And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. • Isa 2:3  And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

  26. Mal 4:4  Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments. • Eze 46:3  Likewise the people of the land shall worship at the door of this gate before the LORD in the sabbaths and in the new moons.  • Eze 46:9  But when the people of the land shall come before the LORD in the solemn feasts, he that entereth in by the way of the north gate to worship shall go out by the way of the south gate; and he that entereth by the way of the south gate shall go forth by the way of the north gate: he shall not return by the way of the gate whereby he came in, but shall go forth over against it.

  27. Summary • Based upon following Jesus, we keep the Holy Days as best we can at the present time • Since they will be kept in the future, logic tells us they should be kept at present • We need to pray and watch, the Holy Days are tied to prophecy • If we are grafted in , look to the root, the church has not replaced Israel
