  1. The Application of Membrane Technologiesin Wastewater Re-use Mohamed Salah, P.Eng. Joint General Manager Water Technologist Larsen & Toubro Limited Waste Technology India Expo January 18-20, 2018

  2. Presentation Outline

  3. Why Membranes for Reuse • High quality treated effluent (BOD, COD, Turbidity, TP); • High log removal of pathogens hence less disinfectants; • Small footprint; • Short construction schedule; • Easy installation; • Re-use: Irrigation, service water and process water.

  4. Membrane Types • Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) • Combination of secondary and tertiary; • Submerged UF membranes; • PVDF and PES; • Hollow fibre or flat sheet; • Smaller footprint and better quality than ASP.

  5. Membrane Types • ……Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) • Bioreactor operates at MLSS of 8000-9000 mg/L; • Flux rate 20-30 LMH at average flow and 40-50 LMH at peak; • Air scouring and high recirculation rate required; • BOD/NTU/TN of 5/0.2/10 respectively.

  6. Process Application • UF & MF Tertiary Filtration • Post secondary treatment; • Pressurized skid mounted membrane modules; • Hollow fibre (inside out/outside in); • PVDF, PES, and PVC; • High flux rate 60-75 LMH; • Smaller footprint and better effluent quality than sand or disc filters.

  7. Process Application • Reverse Osmosis (RO) • Post tertiary treatment; • Removal of dissolved solids; • Two stage RO with high recovery; • Mostly industrial process water applications such as boiler feed water etc.

  8. L&T’s International Re-use Experience

  10. Ultrafiltration Installation – Doha, Qatar

  11. Membranes Going Forward • Membranes capital cost is coming down: • High demand in the Chinese market; • Customer acceptance increased demand; • Increase of vendor pool; • Increase of application pool; • Decrease in manufacturing cost; • Various options of membrane materials.

  12. Membranes Going Forward • Improved operating cost: • Vendors have confidence to guarantee up to 10 years; • Reduced replacement cost; • Decrease in chemical consumption; • Optimization in backwash and air scouring; • Improved life cycle cost; • Better trained operators.
