  1. UNAHOH-UGANDABy: Patrick Gift Egessa Using CRPD as a tool to Create Aware & support HoH in Uganda.

Introduction and Background • Uganda National Association of the Hard of Hearing (UNAHOH) was started by group of hard of hearing people who realized the antagonizing situations affecting the varsity of humanity since 2000. • UNAHOH is a community based Organization registered under the companies Act 1989. Under Certificate No. (LUB/445), and was also registered as a non- government at national level with the ministry of internal Affairs under Certificate No. S.5914/7935 as a recognized as Non - governmental organization in Uganda.

  3. Our Activities in Ugand and outside Uganda • UNAHOH is to carry out its activities of offering training service to several disable people, offer hearing Aids to the Hard of hearing people and to offer social service to its members.

  4. Article 6 of CRPD;Creating awareness equal participation in Society & Equal opportunities. • Here efforts are put in response to the lack of recognition of the rights of women and girls with disabilities; • Equal participation in society e.g. Leadership in community • Equal benefit is needed like medical services and education too all. • Women & girls must have equal rights in their family like boys and men in homes Creating awareness is our strength in this struggle.   5. Articles 7,8, 9 , 24 and 25UN CRPD Provides • We create awareness and encourage parents to educate children with hearing loss: • - Here, children raise their voices and this is important. We need to listen to them, by providing necessary support like. Children’s rights are: • Right of shelter. • Right of food. • Right of education. • Right of treatment. • Right to medical treatment Patrick teaches HOH children to communicate using sign language Children with hearing loss raise their voices for services during the World hearing day.

Article 27Creating awareness and Accessibility to employment for HOH • -This is very important for people with disabilities to earn a living. • -Enables HOH people to demonstrate and expound their skills and abilities, Technically, to unviel the skills of hard of hearing people through:- Skills training in metal fabrication & welding. Hard of hearing young men demonstrates their technical ability and skills in photography and videography at Kingdom TV station in Uganda, guided by Patrick Bashil is HoH & a member of UNAHOH, skilled in metal fabrication & welding.

  7. Article 9Creating awareness about Human Rights and Accessibility We need to sensitize & create awareness to HoH First:- • - HoH must know who they are, • - HoH must know their rights, (CRDP). • - Awareness must go to other people in the community or Government to understand who are HoH(Mild or retarded hearing loss is not Physical). • - Accessibility should not be limited due to disability.

  9. Now we have Education/Getting Knowledge is key in CRPD for HoH Patrick and HoH at Ntuuse School during World Hearing Day Patrick and HoH children at school Patrick and HoH teacher during the painting exercise at school

BRIDGE CRPD-SDGsTraining of trainerModule A 2017, Geneva 20-25 March 2017 • All human Rights for all persons with disabilities 0.5 days • In depth understanding of CRPD complex issues: non-discrimination reasonable accommodation, article 12, article 14, immediate vs progressive realization, access/accessibility/reasonable accommodation (1.5 days) • How to explain CRPD: focus on how to facilitate 2 mn / 1 article exercise (1 day) • What means compliance with CRPD? (0.5 day) • Legal harmonization • Attendance to a CRPD country review and debriefing (0.5 day) Patrick participates in the bridge training in Geneva Patrick & colleagues after attending a meeting with WHO officials in Geneva

  13. Loop Conference in Berlin & Denmark 15th October 2017 • I also attended a loop conference in Berlin later to where I visited the school; CENTRE FOR HEARING LOSS – FREDIRICA DENMARK’. • Here I received; • - Knowledge on training teachers for HoH, Setting the classroom environment, acoustic furniture for classes and creating partnership between the two schools. After the loop conference in Berlin Patrick looks at Acoustic Furniture at Centre for Hearing Loss Denmark

  14. HOPE JUNIOR SCHOOL – NYANAMA CAMPUS • Because we want to see our vision come to pass, we have established a primary School for Inclusive education. Children with hearing loss can now attend school. See the pictures Patrick posse for a photo with teachers and children with hearing loss at the School
