StateNets in the Internet2 Community….or why we’re here • Continue to be interested in State Networks’ issues, concerns, opinions, challenges • Heather Bruning - SEGP program • Ann West - middleware • The Internet2 community needs your input on the future of national advanced research and education networking

State Networks and the National Advanced R&E Networking Community • Critical role for state, multi-state and metro networks in 3 tier backbone, regional, campus structure • Facilities-based state networks provide opportunity to support multiple networks, services • Ability and opportunity to connect diverse set of institutions/organizations – university, school, public, corporate, etc.

Issues, Opportunities for Input • Who is the Internet2 community? • Membership model review • ~11 state or regional networks members in Affiliate category now • More explicit home for state/regional networks • Facilitate/Coordinate/Support activities for state and regional networks • Existing: FiberCo, Quilt support, NTNC hosting, Joint Techs, other workshops • More: best practices business/operational models for facilities-based networks, economic development issues SIG

Opportunities for input related to the new Internet2 network infrastructure and policies • Intention with new network to promote, encourage, cajole aggregation • Even more critical role for statenets • Agreement with Level3 means community can decide usage policies with almost no going-in restrictions • Statenets are front line for variety of institutions – new network participation model
