  2. Introduction • Jackson County Sheriff’s Office since 2003. • Worked 3 years in the jail • Graduated the Northeast Georgia Police Academy in 2006; Class 205. • Worked as an SRO at the middle school and elementary school level since February 2009.

  3. Goals • Understand the importance of firearm safety • Understand effects associated with the misuse of firearms • Where to obtain information on available firearm safety classes

  4. What is Firearm Safety? • Firearm Safety is having the proper knowledge and skills of a firearm, so as to use or handle them properly.

  5. Why do we need Firearm Safety? • In 2001 there were 29,573 deaths in the United States alone due to firearms. 802 were determined to be accidental!!! There is a DRASTIC need for firearm safety!! (Center for Disease Control; 2002)

  6. Gun Safety 101

  7. History of Firearms • 14th Century began the introduction of the musket. • 19th Century brought the introduction of the Single Action Revolver. • In the early 1900’s the Model 1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol came onto the scene; widely used by the U.S. Military and early Law Enforcement.

  8. Gaston Glock • In 1982, Gaston Glock introduced his 1st Safe Action Pistol, the Model 17. • Introduced the “SAFE ACTION” concept in modern handguns. • Comprised of three (3) internal safety features allowing for a better, more efficient firearm.

Safety tips for handling a firearm • Treat all firearms as if they are loaded!! • Keep your finger off of the trigger unless you intend to fire the weapon. • Do not handle or operate under the influence of drugs or alcohol!!! • Be knowledgeable of the firearm in which you are handling (Read safety manual that comes with your gun) • Never point a gun at something you don’t intend on harming.

  11. Properly Storing a firearm • Always unload firearms before storing • Apply gunlocks if available • Place firearms out of reach of small children • Store weapon and ammo separately

Cable Lock Mechanism • Cable feeds though the magazine well and follows out of the ejector port where it then locks. • Store keys in a separate, safe location away from firearm. • Average cost…..usually included with the purchase. • If not, your local law enforcement agency can provide on at no cost.

  13. Trigger Guard Lock • Inserts into the trigger guard housing the trigger obstructing any ability to fire the weapon. • Safest, most practical form to use on revolvers. • Average cost…$10

  14. Gun Safes • Come in all sizes allowing for one or more guns. • Most effective way of securing a firearm. • Average cost anywhere from $20 and up depending on size and need.

Do accidental shooting really occur that often? • According to Kidsandguns.org, over 50 accidental and intentional shootings have occurred since 2003 in Georgia that involved juveniles under the age of 18. • Atlanta, Ga-11yoa boy shot and killed while playing with gun with 13yoa friend(2007) • Valdosta, Ga- 3yoa male accidentally shoots self in neck with unsecured pistol(2007) • Conyers, Ga- 9yoa male shot accidentally with his mothers gun(2007) • Bethlehem, Ga- 10yoa male playing with 11yoa friend, shot self in leg with 12 ga. Shotgun.(2008)

  17. It Can Happen to us Too!!! Kennesaw Police Dept. End Of Watch: Tuesday, September 13, 2005 Age:23 Tour of Duty: 4 months Badge Number: 9979 Officer Drummond was accidentally shot and Killed while attending the North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy. She was shot during a firearms training session when the instructor’s firearm discharged as he was performing a demonstration.

  18. Summary • Today we have learned the basics of firearm safety and the importance of this training. We have learned of the unnecessary deaths that improper handling causes when they could avoided through simple techniques. There are no accidental shootings…..only negligent discharges. Meaning if we were not negligent, these “accidents” may not have occurred.
