  2. Cell Counts • When blood samples are taken, a hematologist will examine the sample a conduct a cell count • Different types of blood cells make up a specific portion of our blood • If this varies too much from the normal range, it can indicate a disorder

  3. Red Blood Cells • Normal RBC 4.8 - 5.4 million cells/ µL • A high RBC count (erythrocytosis) can be caused by living at high altitudes, smoking, and by disease. • A low RBC count is called anemia • caused by blood loss, iron deficiency, or other diseases • Most common symptoms are fatigue and shortness of breath

  4. White Blood Cells • Normal White blood cell count is about 1 for every 1000 RBCs; 4,500-10,000 cells/ µL • High WBC counts can indicate: • An infection: which WBC are present in excess is determined by the type of infection • Leukemia: Cancer of the bone marrow that produces lots of abnormal white blood cells and reduced numbers of platelets and RBCs

  5. Chemotherapy • These chemicals kill cells that divide quickly, including healthy cells, like those in the bone marrow and the digestive tract • An individual going through chemotherapy will have reduced numbers of all blood cell types
