  1. Transitional and Coastal Waters Seagrass (Angiosperms) By: Joao M. Neto (IMAR-University of Coimbra) NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)

  2. Participation: Coastal waters - DE, FR, NL, IE, UK Transitional waters – DE, ES, FR, NL, IE, PT, UK Meetings: - June 2009, Lisbon (PT) - March 2010, Lisbon (PT) - September 2010, Figueira da Foz (PT). This meeting happened during ECSA 47 symposium, only 3/11 MSs (BE, ES, PT) could attend the meeting although one more joined the group at following day (NL). - January 2011, Brussels (BE). This meting was specially dedicated to saltmarsh issues, and counted with presence of Nikolaos Zapoukas and Wendy Bonne from JRC. - 6-7 April 2011, Lisbon (PT) - November 2011, Ispra (IT) NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)

  3. Over view of methods for IC in CW: NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)

  4. Over view of methods for IC in CW: Pressures NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)

  5. Over view of methods for IC in CW: Pressures NEA 1/26 (DE, FR, IE, UK) NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012) Figure 1 - The response of EQR against the resources change use pressure. The EQR series is the general perspective when all MSs are included in a unique dataseries.

  6. Over view of methods for IC in CW: Pressures NEA 4 (DE, NL) NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012) Figure 2 – The response of EQR against total pressure index. The EQR were calculated by both MSs to all sites. The years considered in the analysis are recent than 2008.

  7. Benchmarking: - The continuous benchmark procedure was followed since NO COMMON window of pressure could be identified simultaneously for all MS; - Sites were assessed by all MSs and the continuous benchmark approach was used to correct dataseries from MSs prior to the comparison (standardization). In this process the offsets were estimated through application of GLM (Statistica software); - The corrected data (EQRs and boundary values) were used in the boundaries harmonization which were calculated by using the Intercalibration Excel Template Sheets (v1.24) constructed by Dirk Nemitz, Nigel Willby and Sebastian Birk to support the intercalibration exercise NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)

  8. Offsets estimations: Table of offsets used to correct EQR and boundary thresholds for NEA 1/26 and NEA 4 prior to the application of the Intercalibration Excel Template Sheets (v1.24) for boundaries harmonization. NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)

  9. Correlations between EQR and PCM (from IC spreadsheets): FR IE DE UK NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)

  10. Boundary setting procedure: Boundaries were initially equidistant for all MSs participating in the IC2 (national definition). Boundaries were adjusted (see tables below) by using the offsets of the corresponding country, calculated through the GLM, before inserted into the Intercalibration Excel Template Sheets (v1.24). NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)

  11. IC results NEA 1/26 (option 3): - adjustments needed for IE and UK NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)

  12. IC results NEA 1/26 (option 3): - after translation of boundaries into national scales the results are the following NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)

  13. IC results NEA 4 (option 3 between two MSs): there are no changes needed for MSs boundaries. NL and DE can use boundary thresholds initially proposed: H/G = 0.8 and G/M = 0.6. NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)

  14. Over view of methods for IC in TW: NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)

  15. Over view of methods for IC in TW: Pressures NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)

  16. Over view of methods for IC in TW: Pressures NEA 11 (DE, FR, IE, NL, PT, UK) NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012) Figure 1 – Response of EQR (individual MSs) against the pressure (significant pressures index). The EQRs were calculated for all sites by all methodologies.

  17. Benchmarking: - The continuous benchmark approach was used for IC of seagrass in TW – NEA11. For calculation purposes, all sites were identified as benchmark sites, and included into the same type.; - Sites were assessed by all MSs and the continuous benchmark approach was used to correct dataseries from MSs prior to the comparison. In this process the offsets were estimated through application of GLM (Statistica software); - The corrected data were used in the boundaries harmonization exercise which were calculated by using the Intercalibration Excel Template Sheets (v1.24) constructed by Dirk Nemitz, Nigel Willby and Sebastian Birk to support the intercalibration exercise. 18. Offsets estimations: Table of offsets used to correct EQR and boundary thresholds for NEA 11 prior to the application of the Intercalibration Excel Template Sheets (v1.24) for boundaries harmonization. NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)

  19. Correlations between EQR and PCM (from IC spreadsheets): NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)

  20. IC results NEA 11 (option 3 subtraction): adjustment was needed for UK and IE NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)

  21. IC results NEA 11 (option 3): - after translation of boundaries into national scales the results are the following NEA-GIG: Intercalibration Validation Meeting (Ispra, 20-21 March 2012)
